Unexpected hurdles in research
This summer, I faced significant hurdles in completing my research. From struggles with health to larger systemic issues in my country, I found myself in a position I never expected to be in during my Laidlaw research summer. Through it all, I learned several key lessons that have transformed the way I approach research and problem-solving.
One of the most valuable takeaways was the importance of open communication with my mentor. Initially, I was hesitant to share the extent of my struggles, hoping I could resolve them on my own. However, I soon realized that my mentor’s guidance could have helped me navigate these challenges more efficiently if I’d been more transparent. Going forward, I intend to communicate more proactively, ensuring my mentor is updated on any difficulties I face so we can address them as a team.
This experience also taught me about adaptability and resilience. Research rarely follows a straight path, and setbacks are inevitable. The challenges I encountered weren’t just logistical but were deeply rooted in factors beyond my control. Accepting the unpredictability of research allowed me to see each obstacle as a chance to practice resilience, and gain valuable experience for the future. Systemic issues in my country also brought a new perspective on the research landscape and the importance of working within the realities of the context. My unique barriers revealed how much research relies on stable infrastructure and support, and how those in the Global South uniquely suffer from this disparity.
Additionally, I learned the importance of self-care. Prioritizing my health initially felt like a setback, but it ultimately made me a better scholar in the long run.
This journey was far from what I envisioned, but it offered invaluable lessons in patience, adaptability, and the importance of open communication.
