Revitalizing Italian-American Heritage in San Francisco

San Francisco's culture is incomplete without Italian-American heritage, yet their contributions are fading from public awareness. To address this underrepresentation, I embarked on a six-week Leadership in Action project to revitalize appreciation for their impact on the city.

What is the specific problem, cause or opportunity you are exploring?

I am supporting the preservation and promotion of Italian-American cultural heritage in San Francisco. The Italian American Museum serves as a vital institution for celebrating the history, art, and contributions of the Italian-American community.

The specific problem I am addressing is the underrepresentation and fading awareness of Italian-American history and culture within the broader community. Many locals and visitors are unaware of the rich heritage and significant impact that Italian-Americans have had on the city's development.

What is the big-picture idea/vision and desired outcome of what your LiA project is trying to achieve in order to address the need or problem above?

The big-picture vision of my Leadership in Action project is to revitalize and sustain the appreciation of Italian-American heritage in San Francisco. The desired outcome is to increase public awareness and engagement with the museum.

These represent how you will achieve your goal. Write down three to five SMART objectives outlining how you will achieve the overall goal.

  1. Develop a Social Media Campaign to Increase Online Engagement by 15%

  2. Organize a Community Outreach Event Within 4 Weeks

  3. Enhance Visitor Experience by Creating an Informational Brochure

  4. Transcribe 200 Artworks for Visually Impaired Individuals and Ensure Diversity Compliance

  5. Digitize and Upload 25 Artifacts to the Museum's Online Archive

List any challenges, barriers or risks to achieving your objectives

Completing these objectives within a six-week timeframe presents significant challenges, including tight time constraints that may affect the quality of work. Limited resources and the need for specialized skills for tasks like transcribing 200 artworks and digitizing artifacts could hinder progress.

What are the significant activities/objectives of the LiA project outlined by week?

In Week 1 (June 20th), I initiated my Leadership in Action project at the Italian American Museum of San Francisco by meeting with museum staff to discuss and receive approval for my objectives. I began developing the social media campaign to boost online engagement, started designing an informational brochure to enhance visitor experience, and selected 200 artworks for transcription to assist visually impaired individuals.

In Week 2 (June 27th), I advanced my Leadership in Action project by launching the social media campaign, posting engaging content that began to increase online interaction. I finalized and printed the informational brochure, which is now ready for distribution to museum visitors. Additionally, I initiated the transcription process for the selected artworks to aid visually impaired individuals.

In Week 3 (July 4th), I made significant strides in my Leadership in Action project by finalizing plans for the community outreach event scheduled for next week. I secured guest speakers, coordinated with local artists, and intensified promotional efforts through social media and local community boards.

In Week 4 (July 10th), I focused on executing the community outreach event, which successfully attracted over 60 attendees who engaged with Italian-American cultural exhibits and activities at the museum. We also completed the transcription of all 200 artworks, enhancing accessibility for visually impaired visitors. What went well was the seamless collaboration with volunteers and the positive feedback received from event participants, which boosted the museum's visibility.

In Week 5 (July 17th), I focused on evaluating the impact of our recent initiatives at the Italian American Museum. Analyzing the data, I found that our social media campaign resulted in a 25% increase in online engagement, surpassing our initial goal. I also worked on digitizing artifacts for the museum's online archive, successfully uploading 20 out of the 25 planned items.

In Week 6 (July 24th), I concluded my Leadership in Action project at the Italian American Museum by finalizing the digitization and uploading of all 25 artifacts to the museum's online archive, making them accessible to a global audience. I also conducted a review meeting with museum staff to assess the project's impact and discuss future initiatives.
