Research Poster- Bugs, Bias, and Colonialism: Decolonizing Entomophagy in Mexico
While having a rich significance and history, and having potential in the realm of sustainability, entomophagy, and insects as a whole, hold negative connotations, particularly by Western countries. The driving factors being the negative associations insects hold such as disgust, contamination, and fear. Interestingly enough, the root of these associations lies heavily with the history of colonialism. The potential of insects as a sustainable source of food and feed is evident, nonetheless it is crucial to recognize that the acceptance of entomophagy should not be rooted solely in its sustainability benefits. The cultural significance of entomophagy in various societies, particularly in Mexico, underscores the importance of respecting and valuing Indigenous knowledge and traditions.
