What went well?

The progress I made; what was achieved and done

In the second week working with WRI, I dove into my equity project. WRI finances restoration projects (both for-profits and non-profits) in Africa. My role in this project was to identify how many of those projects are female vs. male-led and then determine whether the female-led or male-led projects were more or less impactful (based on hectares restored, trees planted, and jobs created). Moreover, I co-hosted a session on creating a pitch deck for entrepreneurs in the program, and wrote/published notes to the entrepreneur portal.

What could have been done differently?

Things that did not get done and/or could be changed

In general I think performing the equity project took longer than I was expected (which was still not done by the second week). The first task was to determine if projects were male-led vs. female-led. Surprisingly, finding that data was more difficult than I imagined. I had to consult the companies’ websites, social media, LinkedIn, etc. Eventually I settled on looking at who signed the loan/grant contract which simplified the process.

What did I learn about myself when working with others?

Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited

For the first two weeks, I found it somewhat difficult to stay focused while working remotely. I loved getting to know my team members from one-on-one calls and team meetings, but I wish I had had the opportunity to work in an office and see my team members in person.

What did I learn about leadership?

Leadership attributes and insights I developed

I think an important skill I developed was about how to know when to ask for questions, both being confident in asking them and knowing how to asking good questions (i.e. doing the necessary research on my end before asking my boss).

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

What I still need to develop

The next step will be about a) learning to take better notes for the entrepreneur portal. I want to make sure that the content I’m creating for the entrepreneurs is as helpful as possible.
