I typically start my day with a one on one check in meeting with my main supervisor to catch her up on my work and ask/answer any questions we may have for each other. We then pivot to group meetings with different supervisors and the volunteer group. During these meetings, each person brings the group up to speed on their personal work and asks for any help that is needed. This is also the time we discuss current or possible projects to improve the Serve the City organization for beneficiaries and volunteers. Additionally, some days, the volunteers such as myself, head to workshop sessions - this is similar to a training or class session to teach us about the many issues surrounding current immigration, specifically in Europe. Our engagement with asylum seekers and refugees mostly occurs during the afternoons and evenings as this is when most are able to take time aside from work. We conduct classes to teach them about cultural norms and living rules in France, language help, and advising sessions. We also have our Pair Program that matches a beneficiary with a volunteer - this helps foster a sense of community and friendship for both parties.
My work place is set in a café (Impact Café which has a partnership with Serve the City) where we hold events such as language exchange and cultural integration classes to help make the environment seem more friendly and inviting. But we also have a more office adjacent area on the bottom floor where we hold our team meetings. I am attaching a photo of my favorite couch in the café to participate in Language Exchange and the Pair Program, or even to take a break from work!
