This week little was done as the data wasn't yet available to me due to sharing issues. However, I got to meet some of the volunteers to better understand the operations of Bread and Butter Thing. There are complaints of no-shows, variation of weekly offerings.
I suggested having a pre-payment system where during the sign-up, the user would have to offer their card details, where the payments would be captured on the day, users would be able to cancel their sign up up till the time payment was captured, some people would be put on the waitlist where if there have been a cancellation, they would be notified to fill in that position. This is due to the fact that many users might not have much flexibility in cash that a prepayment days ago might be difficult for them. The prepayment payment system should help lower the no-show rate.
There are also the variation of the weekly offering due to the availability of food that is given by businesses could result in good weeks and bad weeks, where the amount of sign-ups might drop after a bad week, it might be a good idea to provide a preview of the week's offerings or to have a slight floating price that changes according to the week's offering say from 6-10 pounds, which could help deal with the issue.
The vans are also not in use during weekends, which could be used to offer weekend offerings if there is the demand or to be used to help the rural poor that the Bread and Butter Thing could not cover due to the need to have 80 sign ups per week in a location. Parcel lockers with chiller function could be deployed in the rural region where people could obtain the food at a similar pricing by using the vans in the weekends to stock them.
