For my Leadership in Action project, I worked with Thrift for Good, a sustainable enterprise under the Gulf for Good organisation, which supports disadvantaged children in the UAE and globally by rehoming preloved items. My involvement was split between on-site work in Dubai and remote collaboration, which underscored modern leadership's global, flexible natureO. This experience allowed me to witness firsthand how social impact can be amplified through sustainable practices and community engagement.

As a volunteer, I took on a variety of roles. I was involved in sorting and coordinating clothing donations, which sharpened my skills in logistical management and efficient communication. My primary responsibility was organising an event scheduled for November aimed at bringing together disadvantaged communities. This role required working closely with stakeholders, including non-profit organisations, volunteers, and community leaders, teaching me the importance of inclusive and clear communication. The experience also emphasised the complexity of stakeholder management, particularly in a multicultural environment like Dubai, where language and cultural differences present unique challenges. Overcoming these hurdles helped me appreciate the value of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in leadership.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was that leadership extends beyond simply giving directions—it requires active listening, empathy, and an openness to different perspectives. Leading in a culturally diverse setting like Dubai challenged me to adjust my approach, particularly when interacting with individuals who had limited English proficiency. I had to develop creative ways of communicating, including simplifying my language, using visual cues, and being patient to ensure that all participants felt included and understood.

The impact of this project lies not only in its immediate outcomes but also in its sustainable focus on social good. By organizing the November event and facilitating donations, I contributed to building a platform that will continue to benefit marginalized communities in the UAE. Thrift for Good’s mission of reducing waste while supporting those in need is an ongoing effort that will be sustained through continuous volunteer involvement and community collaboration.

Reflecting on my time abroad, I am deeply grateful to Gulf for Good for providing this opportunity. It has not only strengthened my leadership abilities but also ignited a passion for continued engagement with global issues. Overall, this experience has been invaluable, shaping my understanding of leadership in a global, multicultural context and reinforcing the importance of adaptability, empathy, and collaboration. I am happy to say, despite it being the end of the leadership in action project, I will continue to work and support the charity remotely, and in person, with another trip in the planning.
