Leadership in Action - Reflecting on Week 3 in Peru
Week 3 saw our project team start to brainstorm and come up with various possible ways for us to reduce the high anaemia rates affecting children in Cantagallo. We spent several sessions brainstorming and identifying several avenues which we felt could tackle not just the issue of malnutrition but also its underlying cause, namely the lack of a stable income experienced by several groups of mothers whose primary income comes from the irregular selling of their indigenous artworks and craft pieces. This issue of financing, within both the organisation and individual families, impacts on how much and what it is the children are eating on a typical day,
Over the course of the week we were able to break down our potential solutions under three broad topics - funding, establishing a permanent and regular source of income, and new foods. With a clearer idea of where we wanted our project to go, we organised a meeting with a local hostel to inquire as to whether they would be able to sell some of the mother's products in their lobby. We also began compiling a funding directory which included details about various international organisations and the grants offered to social projects. Finally, we also researched a range of iron-rich foods and planned to visit La Caqueta market in the next week to identify possible food substitutions. All of these potential actions were considered to help combat malnutrition rates, either directly or indirectly.
Alongside this ideating and planning stage, we visited Cantagallo twice and helped to provide and serve breakfast and lunch to over 40 children. We also held an impromptu English lesson and looked at the colours, the days of the week, and how to sing Happy Birthday!
