What went well?

The progress I made; what was achieved and done

In the second week of the internship, I was able to learn more about the Fijian culture through the cultural workshops and sessions. One of them includes the cooking workshop in which we saw the live cooking of Fish Ceviche (Kokoda). I also gained valuable knowledge regarding the mental health situation in Fiji which allows me to better understand the issue and brainstorm solutions to solve the problems. In terms of our group progress, we have started working on our delegated tasks in which each person conducts extensive research on two mental health issues, starting from the statistics, symptoms, causes, and treatments. With our findings in hand, we are planning to make a digital 12-month mental awareness poster and each month discusses specific mental health issues.

What could have been done differently?

Things that did not get done and/or could be changed

The workshop session could have been more interactive between both parties despite having it online.

What did I learn about myself when working with others?

Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited

I learned that I am very flexible in terms of accommodating different opinions and finding the middle ground when having discussions. For example, we are given the freedom to choose our own mental health topic to work on. I have already chosen a topic, however one of my teammates contacted me and asked if I could switch my topic with her since she’s more familiar with that particular topic and has previous experience making an infographic about it. Without any hesitation, I decided to let her switch the topic.

What did I learn about leadership?

Leadership attributes and insights I developed

Being a leader means you have to gain the trust of your members/followers. Such trust would allow a leader to effectively guide the group and resolve any differences arising from your members’ personalities and opinions.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

What I still need to develop

I would like to increase my courage in speaking my mind during a group discussion.
