A Vibrant Beginning: My First Week with makesense_americas in Mexico City
Welcome to the Melting Pot: Orientation and Design Workshops
My journey through the makesense_americas program kicked off in the bustling surroundings of Mexico City. The week started with a series of engaging design training workshops, where we plunged into the depths of user experience. The focus was on crafting solutions to enhance interactions within Huerto Roma Verde, a beacon of environmental regeneration. The energy was palpable as ideas flew across the room, mingled with the excitement of new faces and the anticipation of creating meaningful change.
Meeting Paco: Insights into Geo BioSystemic Paradigms
One of the highlights of my week was meeting Paco, the visionary founder of Huerto Roma. A dedicated environmental activist since the 90s, Paco introduced us to the concept of the Hikuri—the graphic representation of the Geo BioSystemic Paradigm. This innovative model challenges traditional paradigms, aiming to revolutionize our communal and urban metabolism towards common biosocial wellbeing. Learning about this foundational concept that inspired the creation of Huerto Roma Verde was not just educational but deeply inspiring.
Spiritual Cleansing: The Temazcal Ritual
An unforgettable experience was participating in the traditional temazcal ritual at Huerto Roma. This spiritual steam bath, rooted in indigenous practices, was a profound journey of purification and renewal. It provided a unique window into the rich cultural fabric of Mexico and a deeper connection with the earth and our inner selves.
Exploring Utopia in Iztapalapa
Our visit to Utopia in Iztapalapa was a stark illustration of the complex interplay between environmental challenges and poverty. The local government’s initiatives, such as commissioning artists to paint educational murals on rooftops, showcased a creative approach to uplifting the community. This visit expanded my understanding of how environmental and social issues are intricately linked and addressed through innovative local solutions.
Cultural Fair: A Tapestry of Traditions
The week also featured a cultural fair where the scholars showcased their diverse heritages while engaging with the local volunteers. This event was a vibrant tableau of intercultural exchange, fostering a sense of global unity and mutual respect among all attendees.
Historical Musings: A Day at Chapultepec Castle
To complement the immersive program, I explored Chapultepec Castle and the National History Museum. This excursion offered a historical perspective on Mexico's rich heritage, aligning beautifully with the contemporary cultural experiences of the week, providing context to the cultural immersion I was experiencing.
Challenges and Reflections
Despite the excitement, the week wasn’t without its challenges. Working and living with people from diverse backgrounds has pushed me to embrace different perspectives and lifestyles, enhancing my adaptability and cultural sensitivity. These challenges are shaping me into a more culturally sensitive and flexible individual, ready to tackle the forthcoming weeks with enthusiasm.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on my initial week with makesense_americas, I feel a growing excitement for the upcoming experiences. The blend of learning, cultural immersion, and community engagement has set a solid foundation for personal and professional growth. I am eager to see what the next five weeks hold and how this journey will transform not just my perspectives, but also my contributions to global sustainability and community well-being.
Stay tuned for more updates as I continue this incredible adventure in Mexico City!
