Active Conservation at Xochimilco

Our exploration took us beyond the usual tourist paths of Xochimilco to a more secluded area focused on environmental preservation. Here, our task involved moving and constructing wetland structures, specifically using sediment blocks to rebuild and reinforce the natural habitat. This labor-intensive work, requiring us to transport and set these ecological building blocks, was enlightening. It provided us with a practical understanding of wetland restoration and the critical role these environments play in biodiversity conservation.

Sustainable Innovations at Nidaria

The visit to Nidaria was a showcase in how sustainable practices can effectively lessen environmental impacts while also cutting costs. At Nidaria, we saw firsthand how organic waste is transformed into valuable rabbit feed and how water curation systems support strawberry cultivation, addressing Mexico City's water scarcity issues. This experience highlighted innovative approaches to sustainability that can be replicated to foster environmental and economic resilience.

Hosting an Inspirational Morning on Utopia

A personal highlight this week was the opportunity to host an inspirational morning session with the scholars, centered on the theme of Utopia. Leading this discussion, I encouraged my peers to articulate their visions for a utopian Mexico City and to define actionable steps towards this ideal. This session was not just about dreaming of a better future but actively planning the contributions we can make to turn those dreams into reality. It was an empowering exercise that reinforced our collective commitment to impactful change.

Lessons Learned and the Path Forward

This week's activities reinforced the importance of hands-on conservation work and the power of leading thoughtful dialogues on future visions. Each experience has been a building block in understanding the broader implications of our actions and the potential we have as leaders to inspire and enact change.

As we approach the upcoming weeks, I am energized by the challenges we've overcome and the discussions we've sparked. The journey with makesense_americas continues to be a profound source of personal growth and professional development.
