Blue Carbon Workshop - Public engagement with science
As a part of my research on increasing public awareness of blue carbon habitats as nature-based solutions for climate change, I will be delivering an online workshop for families at the Falkirk Science Festival. This is the presentation that I have created for this event. I thought this information may be of use for anybody else working on public engagement with climate change and/or research. My target audience when planning the level of difficulty of the workshop were 8-12 year-olds.
Based on background research about online engagement, climate change education, and working with young people, my aims for this workshop are to:
1) Connect big concepts to local situations, allowing participants to relate to the topic.
2) Provide a range of activities, promoting interactive self-guided learning, and supporting different learning styles.
3) Have participants walk away feeling positive about the situation. Learning about climate change can leave people feeling anxious and hopeless. I aim to show that this is an exciting topic, and that by engaging with such concepts we can work to fight climate change.
