I am so excited to be a part of the Laidlaw Scholars Network!  This summer, I am working on data extraction for a systematic review of themes relevant to mental health in Filipino communities. In collaboration with Dr. Melissa Palma, I will also develop an independent study project that identifies key shared beliefs among Filipino-American communities, notably immigrants, that correlate with reluctance against receiving preventative medical treatment.  I'd love to connect if you are looking into similar topics or if you'd like to geek out about research in general!

My research project aims to identify features of boardgames that can predict its reading difficulty. Hi everyone! I'm Clara Tobin, an English Student in Trinity College Dublin. My research examines the source material of William Shakespeare. In particular, I am attempting to identify a publication of the Middle English poetry found in the 'Allegory of Death' mural in the Stratford-upon-Avon Guild Chapel that may have influenced Shakespeare. Although the murals were covered during his lifetime due to laws around religious iconography during the Reformation, the resemblance between the murals and Shakespeare's work is uncanny and has not been studied in depth - until now! Aside from literature, I enjoy ballet, classical and jazz music (I play piano and saxophone), travelling and going to the theatre. Hi I'm Conor, I'm a second year History and Political Science Student at Trinity College Dublin. I'm also born and raised in Dublin. This summer I will be researching the topic of refugee youth integration. I hope that this research will contribute towards helping understand a subject that is becoming more politically charged and relevant by the day, in a world that is more connected than ever before. In my spare time, I like to exercise, read, and walk my dog Cócó. I've also been known to enjoy a good Netflix series. Chartered Accountant, International Rifle Shooter, Social Entrepreneur and a 5-time TEDx Speaker.  I started off my career as a professional rifle shooter - representing India for 7 years as a member of the Indian rifle shooting team and winning +110 medals before pivoting into consulting with my most recent stint being with Deloitte. Currently I am pursuing my MBA at London Business School on full scholarship - thanks to the generous support of the Laidlaw foundation, and continuing to work in parallel on scaling my social venture back in India. I am also one of the top 30 individuals selected globally by UN Women to be a part of the 30 for 2030 network, working with the regional office of the Asia Pacific with a focus on accelerating the 2030 agenda. 

I was fortunate enough to conduct academic research under the supervision of Stephen Gethins,  Professor of Practice in International Relations at the University of St Andrews and now a sitting MP. Stephen introduced me to a truly fascinating yet often overlooked area of International Relations: sub-state and regional actors and their place in global politics, with a focus on Scotland in particular. Through this, I have developed an interest in Scotland's place in the world as a nation without an independent foreign office, but as a nation with extensive international influence and a powerful global diaspora. This topic formed the basis of my Laidlaw project, my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation, and my PhD. I take a keen interested in other academic fields such as politics, history, and philosophy. Although an International Relations and Sociology student first and foremost, I had the opportunity of studying Ancient History and Classics alongside my degree for two years. If I were to ever win the lottery, you would find me endlessly cycling University, spending my remaining days studying Ancient History and Philosophy, Politics, Anthropology, Theology, Theoretical Physics and Maths, or whatever subject I develop an interest in down the line. Since leaving the University of St Andrews and the Laidlaw Programme, I completed an MRes degree at the University of Glasgow in Sociology and Research Methods. I received a scholarship for a PhD in Sociology at the University of Glasgow which I am completing part-time in addition to my role as Research Officer at Carers Trust Scotland - a charity supporting unpaid carers which I had previously volunteered for. My PhD is a continuation of my Scottish diaspora studies, seeking to reconcile the notion of 'civic Scottishness' with the Scottish identity of the lived diaspora.  

I'm a final year European Studies student, majoring in Spanish and minoring in German, in Trinity College Dublin. My research concerns the memory, experience, and discourse of gendered violence in the Irish and Spanish civil wars. For my LiA, I worked with Women Rights Initiative (WORI), a grassroots, Ugandan women-led women's rights organisation in Jinja, Uganda, focusing on resource mobilisation.

Hi! I am a 4th year undergraduate scholar at Trinity College Dublin studying Global Business, and I am currently on my study abroad in ESCP Paris. My research project centres on the importance of female leaders from ethnic minorities in the business C-suite & the necessity for better racial and gender diversity on executive boards worldwide.  I’m really looking forward to meeting new people and experiencing new things on this journey!

Hello! I recently graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology Research from the University of Toronto. I’m passionate about youth mental health and how humour can be used to support resilience after adversity. My Summer 1 research project explored the relationship between childhood adversity, aggression, and self-regulation — deepening my understanding of the psychological impacts of early trauma. In Summer 2, I led a Leadership-in-Action project at SOS Children’s Villages in Cape Town, where I designed and facilitated a comedy-based mental health program for teens. That experience led me to found HaHaHelps — an organization that uses improv comedy to support youth mental health through accessible, community-led workshops. I'm currently piloting the full program in South Africa, with plans to expand to more communities globally.
