English and Art History Student, Undergraduate Research Scholar, University of Leeds

I am a member of the University of Leeds' 2021 Laidlaw Scholar Cohort. My self-defined project explores the representation of concurrent themes of nature and isolation in 20th century and contemporary literature. I study English and History of Art and have a love of all things books, art and the outdoors! I also run a zine that features contributions from young creatives across the UK.  Please take a look at my blog which delves into my research project a bit deeper here: https://outdoorfiction.blogspot.com/
Hello, I'm a first-year chemical engineering student at UCL. My research project for this programme looked into the economic feasibility of three different wastewater treatment solutions for organic matter removal and energy production. I also explored the environmental sustainability of these technologies through a self-assessed quantitative impact assessment.
Barkha Batra

Student , University College London

I'm a first-year undergraduate from India, studying Law at University College London. My Laidlaw project, 'The Historical Contractual Incapacity of Married Women,' traces a number of common law decisions and social norms that restricted married women's capacity to contract in 18th-19th Century England. The paper explores the legal rules that operated when a feme covert tried to make contracts with suppliers of goods and services; the reasons behind these rules; and how they changed through statutory reform. I look forward to the rest of the programme!
Zoe Adlam

Student , Durham University

Hi everyone! I am currently a LLB student at Durham University.  My research is focusing on whether the Bar Training Course (the vocational component on the path to becoming a barrister) sufficiently prepares prospective barristers for online advocacy and an increasingly digitalised workplace. This research project stems from my interest in the future of the legal profession, and also my questioning of why there is not much research done into the future of the English Bar more broadly.  Interestingly, my research is a blend of law and business as my supervisor is an academic within the Business department.  Hopefully bringing in this different perspective will help to open up my research further and help me to approach the law from a different perspective.  Please feel free to reach out to discuss anything related to law or business or just to have a general chat because I'm really looking forward to getting to know more Laidlaw scholars!

Steven Zeldin

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Researcher, Columbia University Irving Medical Center

I research Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), a fatal paralyzing disease that strikes seemingly randomly and most often leads to death within a few years of onset. Working from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, I search for a clinical marker of ALS—a key tool to more easily identify it in patients, track its progress, and determine its response to medications. Apart from research, I am interested in science fiction, bouldering, and writing.
