I am a medical student at the University of Hong Kong with a background in Neuroscience. My research focuses on the mechanisms of neural injury in intrauterine growth restriction and how it can translate into electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities. Previously, I have studied the differential effects of acetylcholine on synapses in the hippocampus. I find neuroscience fascinating in all its sub-fields, from synaptic plasticity to structural connectivity to neurological function, and it’s even more exciting when research results can be translated into clinical applications. I also have a long-standing interest in mathematics, and I’m always thrilled to see how mathematics can support and stimulate scientific research (in addition to existing as a brilliant field in its own right). But as much as I love academic research, I wish to see the positive impact it can have on people’s lives as well. Please drop me a line if there’s anything you would like to talk about!

Audrey is Administrative Assistant I of the Horizons Office at the University of Hong Kong. Audrey has been working in the field of international education in Hong Kong since 2010; her portfolio of work spans from programme development and implementation at the undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty level, marketing and promotion, organisation of international conference and events, and providing secretarial support to various committees pertaining to scholarships, fellowships and international mobility schemes.  Her current portfolio includes management of the HKU Laidlaw Scholars Programme, Undergraduate Research Fellowship Programme, short-term experiential learning programmes outside of Hong Kong, and HKU-Common Purpose UK leadership development programmes in Bangalore, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Hanoi. Currently she is setting up two new initiatives, namely EUREKA and The Hong Kong Project, where students will have the opportunities to undertake research methods online course and conduct a EUREKA research project in the former, and collaborate with community partners by proposing practical solutions to real-life problems in the latter. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in TESL and has an MA (Hons) in Translation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. 

With enthusiasm in developing my career in quantitative finance, I had the pleasure to join the Laidlaw scholar program to conduct undergraduate research related to statistical trading. Solid training at HKU and my genuine interests in statistics and programming have equipped me for greater challenges in the analytically demanding finance environment. I look forward to entering exciting conversations with like-minded scholars.

Hi, I'm Chhavi! Brought up in India and Malaysia, I am now a penultimate year Computer & Cognitive Science student studying in Hong Kong. I am passionate about the field of Computer-Human Interaction and have demonstrated experience in Augmented Reality and complex Data Visualization. When I'm not working, you can find me dancing, traveling or maybe just drinking masala chai!

As a prestigious scholarship programme embedded at the Universities of Leeds, Oxford, UCL, York, to name just a few, the Laidlaw Programme equips students with research and leadership skills to help them pursue their academic and professional aspirations beyond their current course of study.

Final-year Durham student studying Politics; President of Durham Laidlaw Scholars' Organisation; Incoming ESRC-funded MA-PhD student in NINE DTP. My research so far has covered ideological identity in left-wing student activism, examining the interplay of social movement theory and the philosophy of identity, and my general research interests include citizenship education, democratic theory and the occasional bit of political anthropology. Outside of my studies it's mainly twentieth-century literature, cocktails and cooking!

I am an alumni of the University of York where I received a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature and Linguistics. I was the Arts and Humanities Subject Lead on the Laidlaw Scholar's Network and the 2020-22 Arts and Humanities Undergraduate rep at the University of York.  After graduating from York I went to the University of Oxford to read for an MPhil in Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics. After 2 years of study at Oxford I work full time in a school and also work on the HEnabled podcast, which aims to showcase the experiences of people with disabilities and long-term health conditions within the British Higher Education system. I am a first year scholar and undergraduate student at the University of Leeds studying towards a BA in Politics and Sociology. My research aims to draw on the experiences of UoL students with a focal point on widening participation students in order to gain a deeper understanding of what inclusive learning spaces are and how they can be achieved. Hello! I'm Reuben, an Art History and Film student researching 'The Sonic Body: Technology, Embodiment, Gender' with the University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. I am also a student filmmaker and illustrator, and host 'The Theory of Everything Podcast' for StAR Radio.

Anthropology and Sociology Undergraduate; from Bristol, UK. I am completing a research project on narrative transmission and reproduction, looking at how oral accounts of geological events are passed down accurately over generations. By understanding how narratives are constructed I am keen to explore interdisciplinary approaches, particularly between Anthropology, Linguistics, Computer-Human Interaction, and Cognition. Other interests include literature, art and photography, architecture, astronomy, and outdoor pursuits.
