Hi, I am part of the 2023 Laidlaw cohort at the University of Leeds.    I am currently studying Adult Nursing. I am passionate about everything to do with nursing. There are many pathways that I will be able to explore throughout my career. However, currently, I am mostly interested in genomics and would like to explore this further throughout my studies. I also have a huge passion for women’s health, especially for different ethnic groups, to be able to provide education and break through the taboo barriers. Working as an adult nurse is challenging but satisfying. It is a vital role where you will make a real difference in people’s lives.    In Summer 2023, I worked on a pre-defined research project: ‘Evaluating Interdisciplinary 'Welcome, Induction, and Transitions' Support in the Undergraduate Curriculum.’ I worked alongside academics and other students to understand the outcomes associated with successful transitions, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The conclusion of my findings can be found on my page, so please have a read! The project and journey were exciting, and I developed a lot more knowledge about education policies and the huge impact it has on students, especially underrepresented groups. From the project, I have built on my leadership style and other skills due to being student-led.   In the summer of 2024, I worked on my LiA project, which focused on teaching health education to children in Bali. I developed a tailored program that could be implemented and sustained even after my placement ended, allowing the students to continue building on what they had learned. I was especially excited about this opportunity, as it allowed me to apply the skills I gained from my first project in a more practical and impactful way. It also gave me the chance to combine my passions for both education and healthcare in a meaningful setting.   Outside of my studies, I love to paint and am passionate about attending galleries and exhibitions. I enjoy spending time in nature and doing yoga. Hi!  My name is Ajay Nathan and I am an undergraduate junior at Georgetown University studying Science, Technology, and International Affairs on a pre-medical track.  I am a member of Georgetown's second annual Laidlaw cohort, participating in research regarding a potential opioid crisis in India during my first summer and participating in a leadership-in-action project my second summer.  I am an eager and driven individual who likes to expand my interests and skillsets often.

Hi! My name is Dua Mobin and I'm a rising junior at Georgetown double majoring in Government and Biology of Global Health and I'm attending Georgetown School of Medicine after I graduate. As a first generation low-income (FGLI) student, I struggled during my freshman year to pursue my interests in research and clinical work because I had to work two part-time jobs to afford living in DC. Therefore, I did not have the time to engage in volunteer research and clinical work that added to my journey as a pre-med but failed to pay the bills. Because of this adversity, I became heavily invested in equity issues that systemically disfavored FGLI students and other underrepresented students.  That is why my Laidlaw project focuses on structural barriers to pre-med students that are underrepresented in medicine, and how that results to pre-med dropout and ineligibility for certain medical school programs. 

Hi, my name is Grace and I'm a second-year Sociology student. I was given the opportunity by the Laidlaw Foundation to conduct research on the student-led project: 'Thinking Inside the Box'.  In order to fully understand the project three other Laidlaw scholars (including myself) conducted interviews with the students, staff and stakeholders involved in the project. My focus for the research project is on the pedagogic approach to 'Thinking Inside the Box' and how it allowed students to practice ownership and autonomy in designing their own authentic learning experiences and skills-development. My LiA is with CraftHER by Swara and focuses on amplifying the voices of women artisans and avocating for change.

Laidlaw Scholar Alumna graduating from BA Management Science and Informations Systems Studies at Trinity College Dublin. My research topic fell outside of my undergrad, I explored the current structures that are in place for the Irish Language Feature Film Industry and its potential for the future. My second summer saw me move around various regions of Nepal, telling the stories of children and staff at SOS Children's Villages, through photo and video.

I'm an Ethnicity and Race Studies/Political Science double major at Columbia! I'm interested in immigration studies, interdisciplinary political science research, and community organizing work. 

I am currently at Durham University studying Combined Honours in Social Sciences focusing on Politics, IR and French. My foremost interests are in the politics of identity, inequality and polarisation, reflected in my research project exploring Durham's colonialist history and the ongoing effects today. This is titled "Absence/presence of Durham’s Black history: Exploring the Black and/or colonial history of Durham University". I am Head of Events for 'Walk On ', Durham's sustainable and diverse student fashion show raising money for FareShare NorthEast which helps tackle food poverty. I have also been a SolidariTee representative, fundraising for the non-profit organisation which provides legal aid to refugees. I am a keen debater and also enjoy playing the piano, cello and singing.  Following completion of my degree, I am looking to do a law conversion course.

I am a 3rd year undergraduate, BA Business Management, Durham University.  My research is: "Local, National, and International perspectives on the role of grassroots sports clubs in local communities." For a variety of historical and contemporary reasons, grassroots sports clubs in the UK have received relatively little attention in terms of the wider work that they are involved with and/or capable of.  I seek to investigate what impact, if any, return on social investment and/or corporate social responsibility exists within grassroots sports. I am approaching the research from a interdisciplinary dimension, i.e., sociology and business discipline. As a rugby player for Durham University and Hatfield College , the founder of a social enterprise, alongside being a Erete Fellow as part of the Effective Altruism Durham programme, the Laidlaw Scholarship in Research & Leadership is an opportunity to broaden my horizons through participation, research, independent thinking, meeting a wider range of diverse people, and grow my leadership skills. 

I am a third-year student at Tufts University studying Community Health and Biology with a Minor in Urban Studies. In my first year as a Laidlaw Scholar, I worked with Dr. David Adler and Dr. Debra Lerner at Tufts Medical Center on a market analysis of clinical depression intervention services for employees.  My research projects have mostly focused on improving health access and resources for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This interest comes from my experiences as working a Direct Support Professional and teaching art classes for individuals with Down syndrome. In addition to researching behavioral health services and the neuroscience of Fragile X syndrome, I enjoy being an active community member and started a political engagement orientation program for first-year students at Tufts. My recreational interests include rock climbing and creating visual art (see some of my artwork here: schung.page).
