Week 1: Reflection
What went well?
This first week, I was able to narrow down specific opportunities at on-location sites associated with the Archdiocese of Washington. This encompasses working at the Spanish Catholic Center in Mt.Pleasant D.C. The Archdiocese is associated with Georgetown University and they also administer the educational institutions that I will also be involved with researching with the team from the McCourt School of Public Policy and the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).
What could have been done differently?
I feel that I needed to do a bit more research at the location where I was working because it was initially unfamiliar and I had to learn to navigate my way there. I also think I could have spent more time practicing my Spanish (which is around B1) before volunteering because I think it would be more convenient for staff at times while I am on location.
What did I learn about myself while working with others?
I have learned so much about the critical work done in major community help centers like the SCC. This encompasses the breadth of services they offer to the community ranging from healthcare, food services, and more. In terms of research skills, it was relatively preliminary work.
What did I learn about leadership?
I feel that I am constantly exposed to efficient forms of leadership while working on this project. However, I feel that I learned that leadership is tied to the community. Serving one's community is a critical part of leadership.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
I would like to develop my research skills and further integrate my research with my work at the Center. I think that my knowledge base at the start of the project was a bit limited and I now have numerous opportunities to learn more, apply myself, and take advantage of the resources available to contribute. I would also personally like to research more about how Catholic-affiliated entities ultimately impact community-based aid as I continue the project.
