This week, we are featuring an LGBTQ+ leader from the entertainment industry to mark the last Monday of Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈


Lena Waithe (1984-) is an American actress and screenwirter. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she knew from a young age that she wanted to work in the entertainment industry. After attending Columbia College Chicago, she began her career as an actor and screenwriter.

She first gained recognition for her work in the Netflix series Master of None. She created several comedy series, including The Chi, Boomerang and TwentiesIn 2017, she became the first African-American woman to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Waithe has also received a Tony Award nomination for her sketch play Ain't No Mo'

In 2018, she was named as one of the 100 most influential people of 2018 by Time. In 2021 and 2022, she was included in Fast Company's Queer 50 list.
