This week I learnt about the importance of having empathy as a leader undergoing any project, starting at its initiation. This was exercised by learning about the wider context of Medellín by acknowledging the issues of conflict the people have experienced but exploring how it has transformed in recent years through initiatives from the local community.

I was particularly inspired by our trip to Communa 13, which was historically one of the most violent places in Colombia. Here we saw how peace has been sought between relationships in the community with individuals starting different initiatives, particularly around dance and education, providing people alternatives to gang culture. Walking around, I was also inspired by the vibrant street art everywhere, displaying the reality of what people have been through and how peace has become so important to the community.

This week, I thus learnt the impact that individuals together can have in transforming a community, making me more optimistic about the impact of the project I will be working on, and changing my perception of the potential for change.
