LiA Final Week, Output 1: Reflecting on a Journey of Ethical Leadership and Global Citizenship
Reflecting on my transformative experience with the “Reaction for Impact” program, I find myself deeply enriched both personally and professionally. My time in Peru, working with Killa and being a Make Sense volunteer, was not only a profound learning journey but also a testament to the power of global collaboration and ethical leadership.
Collaborating with Killa, an inspiring organization, allowed me to see firsthand the impact of grassroots initiatives on local communities. Organizing the fair was an exhilarating challenge that required meticulous planning, creativity, and teamwork. The experience highlighted the importance of understanding and addressing local needs, and it was deeply rewarding to see our efforts come to fruition in such a meaningful way. Applying the principles of collective impact, we worked collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to align our efforts and maximize our results, demonstrating the power of unified action towards common goals.

Working with a team of scholars from around the world was an extraordinary experience. Each team member brought unique perspectives and skills, and the blend of these diverse backgrounds fostered innovative problem-solving and enriched our projects. Utilizing design thinking methodology, we approached challenges with empathy and creativity, ensuring our solutions were both user-centered and impactful. Despite the initial challenge of adapting to life in Peru, where I was unfamiliar with Spanish and the local culture, I emerged with a profound appreciation for both. The warmth of the people and the richness of their culture made every day an opportunity for growth and connection.

Connecting with the local volunteers was a particularly enlightening aspect of my experience. Their dedication and passion for their community were truly inspiring. Through their eyes, I gained a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances and challenges faced by the communities we worked with. Learning from their experiences and witnessing their commitment to positive change was awe-inspiring and provided me with invaluable insights into the power of grassroots efforts and local engagement. Their cultural warmth and dedication were integral to our success and left a lasting impression on me.
My interactions with Judith and Paula, our mentors from Make Sense, were pivotal to my journey. They were like elder sisters to us, and their unwavering support and insightful guidance were instrumental in navigating the complexities of the program and adapting to life in Peru. They helped us define and pursue SMART goals, ensuring our objectives were Specific to our challenge, Measurable and quantifiable, Achievable with the resources we had, Relevant to the community, and Time-bound for 6 weeks. Their dedication went above and beyond professional advice; they genuinely cared about our well-being and success, making their impact on my experience immeasurable.

The friendships I forged during this program are among the most cherished aspects of my journey. The bonds I developed with my fellow scholars are special and lasting, as each person brought something unique and valuable to our shared experience. These relationships have become a source of inspiration and support, reminding me of the power of global connections and the importance of nurturing these connections.

Professionally, I gained invaluable skills in design thinking, project management, and collaborative problem-solving. These skills have significantly enhanced my ability to lead projects and address complex challenges. Personally, the experience has been life-changing, instilling in me a deep sense of empowerment and a commitment to driving positive change.
Looking forward, I am committed to embodying ethical leadership and acting as a global citizen. The program has reinforced my belief in the importance of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and collaborative problem-solving. I will continue to lead with integrity, ensuring that my actions are aligned with ethical principles and contribute positively to the global community. This means advocating for inclusive practices, fostering collaborative partnerships, and continuously seeking ways to make a meaningful impact.

The “Reaction for Impact” program with Make Sense has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional development. The experience of working with Killa, adapting to life in Peru, and building deep friendships has profoundly shaped my approach to leadership and global citizenship. The application of design thinking, the pursuit of SMART goals, and the practice of collective impact have all contributed to a richer, more effective approach to making a difference. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships made, and a renewed commitment to ethical leadership and making a positive impact in the world.
