1. How have the workshops and discussions on leadership this week changed your understanding of what leadership means?

Pamela’s diagnostic tests made me realize that, although they were designed to group us based on leadership styles, they actually revealed just how much diversity exists within those groups. For instance, I scored almost equally across two opposing personality styles, which made me reflect on how arbitrary these tests can be. They don’t define what kind of leader you are, or how effective you might be, they simply offer one framework for understanding how you engage with the world. This made me question the idea that leadership must follow a single model, and helped me embrace the idea that good leadership can look very different from person to person.

2. How might you imagine applying one of the four ways of leading during your summer on campus?

I’d like to apply the model of leading from behind. Specifically, I want to actively listen to and learn from those around me: my research mentor, my personal librarian, and my graduate student mentor. By drawing on their experiences and expertise, I hope to build the confidence and knowledge necessary to take ownership of my project and guide my research with intention and independence.

3. What is everyone most excited about engaging in as part of their summer research project?

I’m most excited to discover findings that challenge my expectations. I’m looking forward to identifying patterns in my research and making connections between primary sources and key sociological theories. Ultimately, I’m eager to develop a thesis that is both insightful and original—something that contributes meaningfully to the field and sparks interest from others working in similar areas.

I really loved how the leadership model that Pamela showed us is not a one size fits all, and I appreciate how you've pointed this fact out, and that you'll actively explore other facets of leadership, specifically leading from behind. I'm super excited to see how your leadership will evolve throughout your research endeavor, and how active listening will allow you to explore more about not only yourself as a leader, but also what other people will be willing to share with you, now that you'll be giving them an avenue to do so.
