Embarking on the journey as a Laidlaw scholar marks a significant milestone, a gateway to a universe full of inspiring minds, challenging endeavours, and transformative experiences.

Our first gathering at the Village Hotel Leeds North unfolded as an engaging mélange of self-reflection and connection. Through the planned activities and workshops, I gained a deeper understanding of my leadership style, specifically using the Quintax Profile Chart as a navigational tool. This experience showed the different personalities in our group, each adding their own touch to our shared leadership style.

As valuable as these insights were, the heart of the residential was the networking opportunities it presented. Mingling with my present cohort, people from past years, and the esteemed staff members I felt part of a diverse group of people, all with unique experiences. The formal dinner, filled with lively chatter and laughter, helped build a sense of community that lasted beyond the meal.

Our second residential at Selside Outdoor Centre in the Yorkshire Dales was a departure from the familiar - an adventure in nature, where theoretical learnings gave way to experiential wisdom. Activities like hiking, caving, and climbing took centre stage, challenging not just our physical stamina but our mental tenacity too.

Caving, a first for me, was a surprise highlight. Finding my way through the dark, narrow passages, I discovered a new kind of strength in myself. Each twist and turn in the cave was a lesson in adapting, and every sound echoed a message of persistence.

Moreover, the expedition taught us teamwork and strategic thinking as we faced tough terrains together. Walking up wet slopes in the pouring rain, we became more than just a group of scholars - we were a team celebrating each other's victories and offering support when needed.

Reflecting on my journey as a Laidlaw scholar, it's evident how profoundly these residentials have sculpted my personal growth. They have instilled in me a robust understanding of leadership, honed my research skills, and kindled a courageous spirit ready to face any challenge.

Now, more than ever, the principles of the Laidlaw programme resonate within me - leading with integrity, fostering a culture of research, and driving systemic change. As I step forward on this path of creating meaningful change, I hold close these invaluable experiences that have left a mark on my life.

After all, if a group of scholars can build a bond and find strength together on a rain-soaked mountainside, I feel confident in our capacity to navigate the complex terrains of the future.
