As part of my research project "Harnessing the Power of Generative AI in Sustainability Education: A Thing Ethnography Approach", I had the privilege of attending the 2024 edition of UNESCO's Digital Learning Week in Paris. This event provided an invaluable opportunity to explore the rapidly evolving intersection of AI and sustainability education, while witnessing global efforts to reshape the future of education through technology.

Over 4 days, this event focused on how AI is transforming education systems worldwide and how this transformation must be approached with fundamental values centered on human rights, social justice, and sustainability. With the common desire to discover best practices for a more human-centered, climate-conscious approach to AI in education, over 900 participants from more than 100 countries came together to participate in plenary and breakout sessions.

Key initiatives highlighted during the week included:

  • The release of UNESCO AI competency frameworks for students and teachers.
  • Presentation of AI regulation policies from regions such as the United States, European Union, and Africa, offering a global perspective on the governance of AI in education.
  • The "Gateways" initiative towards the construction of a public digital learning infrastructure, focusing on accessibility and equity in digital education.
  • Pathways to sustainable futures, emphasizing the role of AI in creating sustainable educational models.
  • A youth forum on technologies, education, and environmental impact.

The collective commitment of the global community during this event highlighted the shared vision of using AI to create education systems that are not only technologically advanced but also ecologically responsible and socially just.

This experience has provided me with insight into the ethical and sustainability challenges posed by AI in education. Moving forward, the key initiatives and frameworks introduced during this week will serve as foundational elements in my research, helping me to explore how generative AI can be harnessed to create educational practices that are not only innovative but also grounded in sustainability values.
