Happy World Humanitarian Day! 🌎 Last Saturday, we celebrated World Humanitarian Day. To commemorate this day, we are featuring a quote from human rights activist Nadia Murad.
Nadia Murad (1993-) is a human rights activist currently residing in Germany. She was born in Iraq, and captured by the ISIS terrorist group at the age of 19. Follwing her succesful escape, she fled to a refugee camp and eventually made it to Germany as an asylum seeker.
In 2017, she published a memoir titled The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity, and My Fight Against the Islamic State, where she describes her captivity by ISIS. A year later, in 2018, Murad founded Nadia's Initiative a non-profit organisation helping women and children victimized by genocides, mass atrocities, and human trafficking to heal and rebuild their lives and communities.
In 2016, she was appointed the first-ever Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. In 2018, she was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Denis Mukwege.
