Be good to yourself 'cause nobody else has the power to make you happy.
Self-Care and Music: George Michael
As we enter the Christmas season, we turn to the words of George Michael, writer and producer of the classic song "Last Christmas". Seen as a pop culture icon, he is known as one of the best-selling musicians of all time. Michael's quote highlights the importance of taking care of oneself and pursuing happiness, something that has become increasingly relevant in the chaotic nature of modern day life:

Leading through the Pursuit of Happiness
George Michael is well known as one of members of pop duo Wham! During his career, he achieved a monumental number of 13 number-one songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 13 number-one songs on the UK singes chart. Notably, he has been won two Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards. He was an LGBT rights campaigner and charity fundraiser, donating profits from "Last Christmas" to charity.
In his quote, Michael reminds us to treat ourselves well, as happiness can only come within, as opposed to external factors. As we arrive at the Christmas season, his words are a reminder to take care of ourselves, practise introspection and be attuned to our needs, getting respite from the business of daily life. It is also a reminder to take time to do the things we enjoy. The quote is a lyric from his song "Heal the Pain", from the album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. Whilst now seen as a modern pop classic, this contemplative and bleak album was a precarious step for the singer, known for his sparkling hits. However, it was a step into the music he truly wanted to follow, in the pursuit of his happiness.
Leadership Grounded in Self-Fulfilment
Michael's words are a reminder to take a step back from daily activities and take a moment to rest, recuperate and concentrate on things that make us happy and fulfilled. They are a reminder that the best leaders take the time to take care of themselves, investing in themselves and their happiness to recharge their skills and abilities.
This emphasises the Laidlaw value of #Brave. Being brave means taking the risk to pursue one's happiness, even if it doesn't seem directly related to the direction we are currently following.
