Hi! I'm Naviya, an Engineering undergraduate at the University of Cambridge (Newnham College). My passion is biomedical engineering, particularly the applications of technology in medicine and public health. I am interested in medical devices, drug delivery, nanotechnology to name some of the very significant (and cool!) technologies being developed and implemented in the field today. My research this summer investigates hydrogel systems that permit acoustic patterning of cardiomyocytes in the pre-crosslinked, fluid state, while providing sufficient structural integrity post-crosslinking to preserve alignment and support tissue maturation. These objectives will be achieved via an acoustic patterning setup including CMs embedded in various hydrogel concentrations as well as comparative mechanical testing of these hydrogels as a “synthetic cardiac slice” to closely mirror native characteristics.

Hello! I'm Lizzie, a graduate of Biological Sciences at Durham University and current Laidlaw Scholars Advisory Board Member. I was extremely involved in sports during school and my degree, which inspired my research project on hustle culture within university sports. I conducted interviews with current student athletes studying and competing at top UK universities to explore the prevalence of hustle culture within university sports and its impact on student athletes' health and wellbeing.  I spent my LiA at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus creating an Impact Report with Cambridge Global Health Partnerships, a linked charity to Addenbrooke's Hospital. CGHP provides ethical, effective, and sustainable partnerships between the East of England and low- and middle-income countries. My task was to showcase the incredible impact of these partnerships on strengthening health systems globally. Hi! I'm Lauren, a first year Biology student at Cambridge, with a particular interest in Biochemistry and Physiology. This has inspired my LiA, looking into how the Social Determinants of Health are being addressed locally in Cambridge by The Red Hen Project - a local charity working to support families experiencing hardship to raise happy, health, and independent children. Working alongside the charity has exposed me to the stark health inequalities that exist even within Cambridge, strengthening my passion for public health and inspiring me to pursue a career focused on improving outcomes for children, families, and communities.

Hi, I'm Mila. I'm an undergraduate geography student at the university of Cambridge. I'm mostly interested in physical geography particularly in hazard risk and the ways that multi-hazards intersect with vulnerability and the ways that this will be impacted by climate change in the future. My summer research project, is focused on the ways Ukrainians, both in Ukraine and in the UK experience and process the ongoing ecocide in Ukraine. 

Hi! I’m Sophie Kleina, a Psychological and Behavioural Sciences student at the University of Cambridge. I’m passionate about language learning and preservation, which is why my Laidlaw research project focuses on the Kashubian language- a regional and Indigenous language of northern Poland, and a heritage I’m proud to be part of. My academic interests span sociology, linguistics, psychology, and education, and I’m especially drawn to work that supports cultural diversity, educational access, and meaningful social change. I care deeply about doing work that helps people, strengthens communities, and protects the richness of human language and identity. Hi, my name is Carys and I am going into my second year studying Medicine at the University of Cambridge. My interests mainly lie in public health, preventive medicine and infectious diseases, however I find all aspects of clinical and community healthcare interesting. I am interested in potential research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and other pressing global issues, and seeing how we can ensure access to appropriate healthcare systemically by reducing inequalities. This summer I am completing my Leadership in Action project with the Red Hen Project in Cambridge - a charity dedicated to helping children and families facing hardship. The charity hopes to expand to a deprived region in Cambridge and I will be evaluating the current services available for children, and where the charity can create the most long standing impact. The project is focussed on preventative measures to ensure children can live happier and healthier lives by reducing barriers they may face. This project is solidifying my current hope to work in paediatrics or public health.
