Week 6 Reflection: Leadership In Action
This week was my last week in the CIESIN office as a summer intern. This week I spent most of my time wrapping up loose ends with other associates in the office on certain aspects of the boundary adjustment portion, which allowed me to gain a deeper insight into working on a project like this full-time and working in the data world of sustainable development.
I didn't realize how much I would enjoy the culture of the office. When you work in a data-heavy profession, it is always assumed that work is more individual and less collaborative. Working with this team completely changed my perception of working with data. In reality, it is a lot more collaborative than what is expected. Seeing as there are so many phases of the development and the refinement process, it is important that everyone is using their skill set to the advantage of the project. I was able to check-in one on one with some of the associates in the office and it was lovely to get their guidance on pursuing a senior thesis tangentially related to my work at CIESIN, and even pursuing work at CIESIN beyond graduation.
This week I was also able to attend CIESIN's summer picnic which involved a lot of office bonding with field-day sort of games. It was the first time I had ever been a part of an off-sight office bonding event and I really enjoyed it! I got to meet other members of the staff, and even become closer to some of the people I had been working with all these weeks. It was nice to have a more social experience in the office to cap off the summer and start the Fall off strong!
