Week 1 LiA Reflection
I never expected my first-year research on gender bias in contract law to leave such a lasting impression. While reviewing cases from the UK and Hong Kong, I kept seeing the same thing—women being labeled “too emotional” or “naturally vulnerable” in legal proceedings. This stereotype was systemic. That’s why, for my Leadership-in-Action project, I chose to work with Hong Kong’s ethnic minority communities. They face the same kind of invisible barriers: job discrimination, cultural gaps, and just not getting a fair shot. This led me to The Zubin Foundation, a registered Hong Kong charity dedicated to empowering ethnic minorities by reducing suffering and providing opportunities. They focus particularly on serving South Asian, Nepali, and other minority communities in Hong Kong through programs that address immediate needs while simultaneously working to change the systems that create those needs in the first place. By leveraging the Foundation’s ongoing efforts, such as community outreach and support programs, I aim to improve access to opportunities for low-income ethnic minorities.
My first day at The Zubin Foundation was exhilarating in the best possible way. After being briefed about the mission and structure of the team, I was immediately struck by their ambition and passion. The morning orientation with my supervisor provided not just an overview of team structures, but more importantly, introduced me to the mission that guides their work. The team members went out of their way to help me settle in, showing me around the office and making me feel welcome. I felt an immediate sense of belonging. These weren’t just coworkers; they were like-minded allies committed to making a difference.
What impressed me most was the team’s cultural fluency as they effortlessly switched between Cantonese, English, and Urdu to serve different community members, demonstrating in real time the inclusive values they advocate for. As I become more involved in the Foundation’s work, I am particularly excited about the prospect of direct community engagement. I look forward to contributing to and witnessing the meaningful impact we can create together.
