Project Outline: The Impact of Polarization on Communal Wellbeing & Neighborhood Connectivity
This summer, I will work under the supervision of Quetelet Professor of Sociology Dr. Mario small to investigate the impact of political polarization on neighborhood connectivity, networks, and social ties. After analyzing the relationship between these two independent variables through geospatial data using the neighborhood tracks, I will pick 2-4 NYC "case-study" neighborhoods for qualitative examination, utilizing community partners and immersion to craft neighborhood narratives. This research aims to exemplify how macro trends of divisiveness and isolationism brought by modern polarization are damaging communities, communal amenities and neighborhood connectivity. This research ultimately hopes to identify a starting place for initiatives to strengthen social connection to combat the dangers of polarization through starting on the local level.
