Attending an academic conference exceeded my wildest expectations. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to design my own research, gather empirical data, and present at a conference during my undergraduate studies. Yet, just a few days ago, I found myself standing in front of the entrance to Columbia University, preparing to present my research project 'Reading Through Gaming in Primary School' in a panel discussion at the 2024 North American Laidlaw Scholar Annual Student Conference.

From the nerve-wracking last-minute preparations to taking the microphone on stage and seeing the eager faces in the audience, I am profoundly grateful for my peers, who were so engaged and supportive. I never anticipated the level of interest and the insightful questions that were raised about my research project. Meeting fellow Laidlaw Scholars from various universities has been an incredible opportunity for exchanging ideas, experiences, and perspectives.

Beyond making connections and enhancing my academic knowledge, I also had the chance to experience the essence of autumn in New York City. I marveled at the city's golden hues at dusk, the seemingly endless stretch of Fifth Avenue, and the stylish hustle of its inhabitants. New York is a place that celebrates diversity and embodies 'The American Dream,' a world apart from my own (located 15 hours away if you take a plane). Visiting NYC, beholding the Statue of Liberty, relaxing and attempting to study on the grass in Central Park, and purchasing a ring crafted from a vintage silver spoon at Chelsea Market were experiences that will forever be etched in my memory, especially the autumn of 2024.

As I look back on my time at the conference, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The knowledge gained, connections made, and experiences shared have left a lasting impact on me as a young aspiring researcher and scholar. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Laidlaw Foundation and The University of Hong Kong Laidlaw Scholars Programme for making this remarkable journey possible. I am eager to continue my academic pursuits, inspired and motivated by the guidance and support received from my mentors and fellow scholars.
