I spent my Summer 1 in the Iyer Stem Cell and Regeneration Lab at Tufts, working on a disease modeling project targeting bulbar-onset ALS, a subtype of ALS known for its aggressive nature and profound effect on disease prognosis. I cultured stem cell-derived motor neurons specific to the hindbrain region with two known ALS-associated genotypes and analyzed their development, electrophysiological properties, and decline over time compared to healthy neurons, searching for cellular-level signatures contributing to neuron death and disease pathology.
