LiA Impact Report: Sustainable Sea Cucumber Farming

This summer I completed my Leadership in Action project with @Under the Wave Organisation, applying my past experience with chemistry and physics research to assist with their sea cucumber farm. It was the ideal outlet to apply the research and leadership skills fostered by the first stages of the Laidlaw Program, as well as to tailor the expression of my character values to support my work. I am exceedingly grateful to my peers and supervisors at UTW and the Durham Laidlaw team for enabling this unique opportunity.

I became a Laidlaw Scholar in 2025 during the first year of my BSc in Physics & Chemistry at @Durham University, with interest in researching interdisciplinary solutions to anthropogenic climate change and pollution.
In my first summer, I developed biosourced polymers for use in laundry detergents, producing a compound with promising performance compared to industry standards. For my Leadership in Action project, I partnered with @Under the Wave Organisation to assist data monitoring at a sea cucumber farm and support sustainable livelihoods in Zanzibar.
