I am an undergraduate student at Georgetown University (CAS '27) studying Physics and Science, Technology, & International Affairs. I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas and am pursuing a career in medicine. Outside academics, I am a volunteer EMT, I am involved in the Georgetown Filipino community, and I spend my free time finding new ways to physically challenge myself (marathons, fencing, wilderness exploration, etc.). As a Laidlaw Program Scholar, I aim to rewrite the narrative surrounding leadership as a practice defined by community impact. Especially in the field I am pursuing, there exists a strong need for advocates who lead alongside those they serve. Through the personal development inherent to the Laidlaw Program, I aim to join a unique cohort of young professionals dedicated toward social change. My Laidlaw research project involves the identification of metabolomic biomarkers indicative of acute radiation exposure. I will utilize mass spectrometry data collected from non-human primate urine, saliva, and serum to improve upon existing radiation exposure models. I anticipate facing the coming research challenges and future opportunities available through the Laidlaw Scholars Network.

Ciao! I'm Leonardo, a Laidlaw Scholar passionate about entrepreneurship, leadership, and creating meaningful change in this world. I come from Italy, and at 17, I took an uncomfortable step by moving alone to the UK to pursue my studies, determined to gain access to an English university, networks, and growth opportunities. Hi, I’m Katie McGowan, a Psychology undergraduate at the University of Leeds and a 2025 Laidlaw Scholar. My academic interests centre around human behaviour, social influence, and cultural psychology. This summer, I’m researching how cultural background and perceived empathy in artificial intelligence influence consumer trust — a project that brings together my fascination with social psychology and cross-cultural dynamics. Outside of academia, I’m passionate about women’s rights, youth leadership, and community impact. I’ve volunteered with organisations including Let Me Know (LMK) and Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA), helping to raise awareness around healthy relationships and gender-based violence. I’m also a Holocaust Educational Ambassador, committed to promoting dialogue, reflection, and education around collective memory and human rights. I currently serve as a School Representative for Psychology, advocating for students and working with staff to ensure that student feedback leads to meaningful change. Leadership, empathy, and representation are values that guide everything I do. Outside of my academic and voluntary work, I love travel and adventure — I hold an Advanced Open Water Scuba Diving certification, and I’m always looking for new ways to explore both above and below the surface. Hello ! My name is Dan, I am a student in electrical engineering at at EPFL, driven by curiosity and a desire to make a positive impact as part of the brand new Laidlaw 2024 cohort. My point of interest is at the intersection between technology and medicine, more specifically in the implementation and applications of modern technology to the human body. To complement my scientific studies, I like to read a lot, especially philosophy works, and I also enjoy doing all kinds of sports throughout the year depending on the season, but from december to april you can be certain that you will find me on the swiss Alps ski slopes. Hello! I am a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in chemistry at the University of Hong Kong. My research project was to develop an electrocatalytic method to upcycle chloride ions (Cl-) derived from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a commonly used plastic product, into hypochlorite ions (OCl-), which is an active ingredient of bleach. An aspiring Clinical Psychologist, currently an undergraduate studying Psychology (Integrated MSci) at the University of York. I see a future in which mental healthcare is adaptive to an individual's cultural and personal needs. I am also interested in alternative/ complimentary therapies for treatment resistant mood disorders such as deep brain stimulation and psilocybin therapy. My current research involves working with a Prosopagnosic (face blind) individual to better understand how we both learn and recognise faces.  For my Leadership in Action programme, I am working with "MakeSense", an organisation based in Mexico City. I am developing a social empowerment project supporting rural communities in Mexico.  

I am a recent BSc Psychology graduate from the University of Durham, with an interest in cognitive and biological psychology. Hi, I am Jyotiraditya Sinh Vaghela and I am a Business management and marketing student in the University of Leeds. I started studying business so I can start my own business or help my dad grow his. I am still learning new things everyday which expand my understanding.  I believe my personality is bit like the game snakes and ladder. One is when I can be extroverted, I will learn and grow the most and I am a bit spontaneous I will be doing as good as my dice roll but on the other hand, I get into a downward spiral where I am an introvert, I am overthinking and I become a bit of a mess like sliding down a snakes stomach but this is where I can learn the most about myself. My hobbies outside are probably travelling, gaming and recently I have started enjoying working out.

I'm currently a first-year student at the University of Leeds, studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering.  My research project is on Electric Vehicle charging point infrastructure planning, addressing a critical aspect of the transition to sustainable transportation. It seeks to optimize the design of EV charging infrastructure in public spaces. Through the evaluation of diverse charging configurations and the application of local/regional datasets, I will generate optimal location and capacity guidelines. These findings will aid local government authorities in establishing efficient and equitable public EV charging infrastructure.

I've been looking after Research Scholars in the Arts and Humanities since 2008, and have been involved with the Laidlaw Network since it was established.  I'm passionate about increasing diversity and making opportunities available to more. I'm a proud Loiner (someone from Leeds) and particularly love to work with students to engage with the city and the amazing cultural and creative industries that we have here.

Hey, I'm Jackson. I'm one of the 2022 scholars at University of Leeds. My course is Mechatronics and Robotics; in particular I'm interested in the ways that technology interacts with social and political issues that are important to me, such as environmentalism, the digital divide and the racial and gender biases in algorithms. My research focusses on improving the robustness of energy storage devices, e.g. for electric vehicles and solar panels. You can read a quick summary below! The recent global shift towards electrification is raising questions concerning the robustness of current energy storage devices. Electrical vehicles require many battery cells connected together in order to provide a sufficient amount of energy to power the car and solar panels contain many generating cells connected. However, the assumptions made when designing and developing these storage devices, can become invalid due to the uncontrolled environmental conditions or unpredictable faults with individual cells in the arrangement. In order to prevent failure and premature end-of-life, a unique collection of equalisation circuits can be designed for a system. My research centers on widening the use cases for these equilisation circuits and investigating whether a single set of circuits can be designed in a way that allows it to be used for a variety of applications rather than just one.
