My name is Sophie (she/her) and I am from South Wales but am currently studying International Relations and Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews. My Laidlaw research project will be studying how nostalgia for life in the former East Germany continues to affect politics in today's reunified Germany, in particular Germany's foreign policy towards Russia. This research is trying to explore the legacy of the Cold War in Europe and how its effects continue to be lived by people today. One thing I am particularly excited about with this research is that I will be going to Berlin for a week to conduct ethnographic research (interviews and participant observation) with former citizens of East Germany.   In my free time, I like to read anything i can get my hands on, as well as cook a lot and try different recipes from around the world. I also really love travelling and exploring new places.  I'd love to connect with someone who is interested in politics and diplomacy or otherwise shares my interests. I’m Sara Sultani, currently studying Public Health at Brown University. I will be working on the research project “Strategizing Solutions to End Youth Homelessness in Rhode Island”. As a public health student deeply committed to addressing complex societal issues such as health disparities, I am particularly interested in addressing the challenges of youth homelessness. This scholarship provides me with a fantastic opportunity to develop my leadership skills and engage in meaningful research. I'm eager to connect with fellow scholars and explore how we can make a positive impact through our projects and leadership development. Outside of my studies, my experience as an activity leader at the Cambridge Arts, Technology & Science Academy with students from different parts of the world enhanced my ability to create inclusive spaces, which is crucial for addressing the needs of marginalized youth.  In addition to my academic and practical experiences, I am committed to fully engaging with all aspects of my summer project. I value consistent participation and aim to make a meaningful impact through my involvement, ensuring that my work contributes to the project's goals and aligns with the core values of community service and inclusivity. I am eager to contribute to and learn from the Laidlaw Network, bringing my analytical skills, cultural competency, and steadfast commitment to improving public health and promoting social justice.

Hi! My name is Gabi, I am Colombian and Chilean, and I study International and Public Affairs at Brown University. I care deeply about human rights everywhere, and have spent the majority of my university years organizing for labor and immigrant rights, as well as food and housing security. I started and currently lead our school's chapters of Amnesty International and Food Not Bombs. I hope to one day work in international human rights law, or documentary production.

Hey everyone - I'm Gitika, but I go by Aki, and I'm a 2024 Laidlaw Scholar based at the University of St Andrews. I'm originally from California, but moved to Scotland to pursue my undergraduate studies in history and economics. My Laidlaw research focuses on the colonial and postcolonial histories of sexuality and gender in Asia, and particularly how it has impacted the current lives and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals based in India and Japan.  I'm eager to meet you all, so do reach out if you want to chat about research or just connect over a shared interest! Hi everyone! My name is Lilah and I am going into my fourth year at the University of Toronto studying Economics and International Relations. I am deeply passionate about climate justice, and am particularly interested in exploring how public policy can be used to mitigate the climate crisis.

Hi there! I'm currently entering my senior sophister year at TCD studying single-pathway environmental science and engineering. My deepest passion is ecology; the intricate and ever-present webs of interaction between everything biotic and abiotic overwhelm me with awe and reverence every day. Communicating how deeply intertwined everything in the natural world is, and how we as humans can responsibly interact with it, is a major interest of mine. Through my Laidlaw research project, I was able to share the importance of urban soil health with both the general public and with academic and political stakeholders. This summer, I aim to further my environmental communication skills alongside the team at SharkLab Malta, auditing and revamping elasmobranch education materials for children and adults.

I am studying Music at Durham University, with a strong interest in disability studies and music education, particularly choral singing and choristership. I am also passionate about social justice, working in for a more equitable and just society which includes all.

Hello! I'm Eavan, a final-year undergraduate student at Trinity College Dublin studying English and Linguistics. In Summer 1, I researched ideas of linguistic ethnogenesis. I investigated how anti-immigrant rhetoric is constructed on false beliefs of historical monolingualism that harmfully 'other' ethnic groups who don't fit within a certain idea of nationhood. In Summer 2, I worked to promote conservation education with the Kasiisi Project on my LiA in Uganda.

Hi, my name is Amber and I'm a year two psychology student at the University of Hong Kong.  I spent my first summer at University of Leeds. My research project aims to identify features of boardgames that can predict its reading difficulty. Hi, my name is Amelia and I'm part of the 2024 cohort! I'm passionate about innovation, technology, and design, and how they each intersect with politics. In my first summer, I examined protest art from the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong. My interest in this topic stems from cultural ties to Hong Kong, my high school visual arts education, and a desire to partake in a broader discussion on links between art and politics. Outside of Laidlaw, I'm also examining links between artificial intelligence and military development. Beyond academia, I love photography, art, and exploring the city with friends. Hello! My name is Alanna, I'm a 2024 Laidlaw Scholar and a final year BSc (Hons) Psychology student from the University of Toronto. I am a youth mental health advocate and the CEO and Founder of non-profit organization HOPE (Helping Our Planet Earth) and Board Member of registered charity Narrative 4.  My work at HOPE focuses on making mental health support accessible to youth internationally through mental health education, empathy and youth leadership empowerment. Amy is the Programme Director of the Laidlaw Scholars Leadership and Research Programme. She works with universities, NGO’s, government departments, businesses and charity partners to manage and develop programmes which further the Laidlaw Foundation’s purpose – to reduce poverty and inequality by investing in the education of the underprivileged and underrepresented and to develop a new generation of diverse and ethical leaders.   Prior to joining the Laidlaw Foundation, Amy spent 9 years leading the US-UK Fulbright Scholarship Programme, working with students, academics, professionals, and teachers across every discipline. She has gained 15+ years working within Higher Education and is passionate about cultural exchange and the benefits it can bring to impactful research and solving global challenges. Prior to this, she led faculty-led programmes hosting US students in the UK and managed a busy student services. She studied American Studies at Sheffield University and University of Pittsburgh.

Hello! I am a multidisciplinary designer and have been with the Laidlaw Foundation for over five years, working to strengthen our global Scholar community and amplify the impact of our programmes. My work lives somewhere between design, education, and anthropology, usually with sticky notes involved. I studied Human Sciences as an undergrad and recently finished a Master’s in Anthropology, both at UCL.  Born and raised in Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 Outside of work?
