I'm currently studying MSP at Maastricht University. In September 2021 I will return to the University of York to complete my degree in Natural Sciences specializing in Mathematica Bioscience.

I am a PhD researcher in Global Health at University College London. I am also a qualified pharmacist (MPharm and BSc Pharm) with an MSc degree in sociology. I am an alumni of the undergraduate research and leadership programme (2020). I've got a degree in Zoology from Trinity College, Dublin and I'm currently studying for a Master of Public Administration (Urban Policy) at UCL. My research project aimed to determine the most abundant plant species in Dublin City and analyse their functional traits to make inferences about these species' suitability for use as nature-based solutions, which is a newly proposed concept for simultaneously regreening cities through the use of nature to combat socio-environmental and climate-related problems. Currently I'm working alongside other Laidlaw Scholars to develop a community kindergarten and evacuation centre in Dreketi Settlement, Fiji. I'm a third-year student at the University of Toronto studying Physiology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Spanish. For my Laidlaw Project, I'm researching the impact of land disturbance on invasive and endemic plant species in the Galápagos Archipelago. Apart from studying invasive species and their growth and spread, my research interests also lie in neuroscience and the memory loss that comes with neurodegeneration. Outside the lab/field, I can be found rock climbing, reading, and exploring cafés all over the city of Toronto.

I'm a third-year biology student at the University of York. I'm originally from Switzerland but came to the UK to continue my studies! I am particularly interested in human and medical biology. My Laidlaw research project focuses on the C-terminus of the Tmem184b protein that is involved in neurodegeneration. I aspire to be a great leader and a strong woman who can lead her team towards the goals we want to achieve!

I am originally from Germany and I am currently studying biochemistry at UCL. My summer research project is a literature review about the impact of the gut microbiome on the treatment response in adults and children undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

I am an Anthropology student at Durham with a particular interest in global health. My research will focus on neonatal health and behaviour patterns of newborns, with a particular interest relating to the North-East. Outside of Anthropology I enjoy modern history, cooking and learning German.

I am a 3rd year medical student at Trinity College Dublin interested in infectious disease at the level of an individual through immunology and microbiology but also at a population level through public health studies. In light of how infections can get out of control in epidemic and pandemics, the need for research in infectious disease agents and cellular immunotherapies has only become more urgent. This, along with the complexity of pathogen-host interactions is what drives my interest to the field.

I carry a very keen interest in understanding both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis in health and life sciences. Specifically, I am fascinated by the fields of human psychology and health sciences. My Laidlaw Scholars research project focuses on whether mindfulness meditation and relaxation response meditation display synergistic effects on decreasing stress perception, when combined into one practice. My motivation towards pursuing research in my areas of interest is partially fueled by my future aspiration to work in research, as a professor. I hope to continue building my research experience, while exploring a variety of psychology-related and health sciences-related research opportunities.

Hi there! My name is Mostin Hu and I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge in June 2024 with my MB BChir. I completed the first three years of my medical degree at the University of St Andrews, and my Laidlaw research looked at the impact of intracellular parasites on host cells (it's not as gross as it sounds, I promise!). I am interested in cardiac surgery and am an incoming PhD candidate at the University of Toronto, Dept of Physiology - Cardiovascular Sciences. Outside of medicine and research, my secret indulgences include ballet, baking, sewing, and spending time with my four cats.

I'm a student at the University of Toronto interested in neurological and ocular health, immunological mechanisms and self-immunity, as well as innovations and leadership within health care. I look to empower the aspiring youth through limitless, accessible education, and foster positive change in our dynamic reality!

My expertise is in molecular genetics, specifically genetic engineering techniques with plants. I also have some experience with plant physiological research and bioinformatics in coexpression analysis and orthologue identification between species. My interests include both the fields of evolutionary and molecular genetics, and I minored in physical and human geography in my undergraduate degree. In future I hope to continue genetic research, aspiring for that which explores links between genetic research, the environment/climate, food security and disease eradication.

I am a science fan who gets her inspiration from stories. On my previous journeys volunteering and traveling around the world, I've met people who opened my mind to the greatest things and biggest issues of their communities. Sometimes those stories make me feel sad and worried, but many times, they inspire and urge me to imagine, innovate, and create changes using my own tools of science and technology.

A graduate of Cambridge University, Susanna’s professional experience includes over 15 years in senior leadership roles in international B2B and learning businesses. Susanna began her career at the Institute for International Research (IIR) where she first worked with Lord Laidlaw, rising to Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). When IIR, which was the world’s largest organiser of commercial conferences, was acquired by Informa plc in 2005 Susanna was appointed CMO of the enlarged group and also led the public company’s investor relations programmes. She subsequently joined Emap Ltd as Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer and CEO of Emap Networks, that group’s conferences business. Later she became CEO of the fashion industry forecaster WGSN and was latterly Group Content and Marketing Partner of the leading strategy consultancy Brunswick Group. A German-American raised and educated in the UK and a committed internationalist, Susanna has been involved in globally trading businesses throughout her career, directing activity in the Americas, across continental Europe, and the Asia Pacific. Susanna has been extensively involved with education and professional development over many years. She was Head of Group Training and led the commercial acquisition and integration of a portfolio of corporate training businesses whilst at IIR; and created learning academies at both Informa and Emap. She believes experiencing and appreciating different cultures promotes better global understanding, creativity and leadership. She is passionate about the power of education to transform lives; and believes that we need to develop a new generation of diverse leaders who are curious, bold and devoted to decency, truthfulness, and innovation. Susanna is committed to diversity not only as a societal imperative but as a critical component of commercial success. As an advisor to the trustees of the Foundation, Susanna first learnt about its purpose and programmes before becoming its Chief Executive responsible for the Laidlaw Schools Trust, the Laidlaw Scholars and its other education programmes. Susanna read English and Philosophy at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. She has five half blues in swimming and water polo; and played netball and rowed for Newnham.
