Mostin Hu

2024 MB BChir Graduate, Incoming PhD Candidate, University of St Andrews (BSc Hons 2021), University of Cambridge (Distinction 2024)

Hi there! My name is Mostin Hu and I recently graduated from the University of Cambridge in June 2024 with my MB BChir. I completed the first three years of my medical degree at the University of St Andrews, and my Laidlaw research looked at the impact of intracellular parasites on host cells (it's not as gross as it sounds, I promise!). I am interested in cardiac surgery and am an incoming PhD candidate at the University of Toronto, Dept of Physiology - Cardiovascular Sciences. Outside of medicine and research, my secret indulgences include ballet, baking, sewing, and spending time with my four cats.
Hello! I am a first year Durham PPE student, and this summer will be researching NGOs that tackle modern slavery, who wields influence within them and whether this influence has led to them making suboptimal decisions. Besides research, I am interested in pretty much everything from physics to poetry to philosophy.
Joseph Phelps

Master's Chemistry Intern at Roche , Roche

I am a Master's student currently doing my industrial placement in medicinal chemistry at Roche. My Laidlaw research focused on the selective complexation of BINOL with ammoniums (both chiral and achiral). In my spare time I enjoy helping and developing chemistry outreach. My primary research interests are in designing new drug molecules to combat disease.

Joseph Cockcroft

Undergraduate MChem Student at the University of York, University of York

Hello, my name is Joe and I'm an undergraduate scholar researching the use of bismuth vanadate catalysts in driving sustainable reactions. This research placement has been invaluable to my personal development in addition to insight into what postgraduate study in a laboratory looks like. Picking up scientific techniques that aren't taught at the undergraduate level gives me an advantage when pursuing a future career, for example during an interview. In terms of personal interests, I have a passion for music. I am Grade 6 for both Bassoon and Drums, in addition to Grade 5 Piano. I am a member of the University of York Concert Band (UYCB), where I was Tour Manager for 2018/19 where I, along with 27 other musicians, toured Holland, Belgium, and Germany for 6 days. I am currently UYCB Secretary for 2019/20 and am responsible for any auditions that take place for conductors/committee members. I am also enthusiastic about the sport. I have been playing hockey for a number of years, including for my college team at university. I also occasionally play floorball for the university and go running regularly to keep my fitness levels up.
Aubrey George

Undergraduate Laidlaw Scholar, Laidlaw Research and Leadership Scholarship

I am a fourth year pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with International Honours in Economics through a joint degree programme integrating The College of William and Mary with The University of St. Andrews. I have studied both International Relations and Economics in depth from an American and British perspective, and have benefitted from each university's respective areas of expertise. My research within Laidlaw has been conducted in the Classics department, which gives testament to my appreciation for interdisciplinary research.
