Hi! My name is Katarina, and I am studying Environment and Sustainability at Cornell University. I am particularly interested in international research on the interconnections between environmental justice, natural systems, and social well-being. During my free time, I like to play violin in chamber music and orchestras, and play board games. 

I am currently an International MBA candidate at IE Business School, supported by the Laidlaw Women Scholarship, where I am expanding my knowledge in global business strategy, corporate governance, and technology-driven solutions for organizational management. With over ten years of experience in internal audit and governance within Kazakhstan’s mining and metallurgy industry, I have contributed to transformative initiatives, including audit system automation, ERP integration, and sustainable reporting processes.  My academic and professional journey has equipped me with skills in change management, process improvement, and corporate policy development. As I progress through my MBA, I am particularly interested in exploring new perspectives on sustainability in business and fostering inclusive organizational cultures. Proficient in English, Russian, and Kazakh, with intermediate Spanish skills, I am eager to connect with and learn from a diverse community of forward-thinking leaders.

I am navigating the intriguing nuances of researching in England, France, Italy and Zambia. Hello! My name is Batool and I am a final year Arts and Sciences at UCL. I take classes on environmental sciences, political science and education. For my summer research project, I co-produced a policy brief with student recommendations for sustainable futures in higher education which is addressed to policy makers in universities in the UK.  For my Leadership-in-Action project, I am conducting a similar research project with WWF-Pakistan. I am organising participatory workshops with university students from Lahore and plan to use this research for my undergraduate dissertation. At UCL I was the President of the UCL Sign Language Society where I led a team of 9 other undergraduate students to organise sign language classes and events to raise awareness of deafness for a society which has over 200 student members. I am currently the Vice President of the Ahlulbayt Islamic Society committee, organising charity campaigns and faith-based awareness events on taking action for global issues. 

I'm currently a first-year student at the University of Leeds, studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering.  My research project is on Electric Vehicle charging point infrastructure planning, addressing a critical aspect of the transition to sustainable transportation. It seeks to optimize the design of EV charging infrastructure in public spaces. Through the evaluation of diverse charging configurations and the application of local/regional datasets, I will generate optimal location and capacity guidelines. These findings will aid local government authorities in establishing efficient and equitable public EV charging infrastructure.

Hi! I am a 4th year undergraduate scholar at Trinity College Dublin studying Global Business, and I am currently on my study abroad in ESCP Paris. My research project centres on the importance of female leaders from ethnic minorities in the business C-suite & the necessity for better racial and gender diversity on executive boards worldwide.  I’m really looking forward to meeting new people and experiencing new things on this journey!

Hi, here is Renie:) I am an undergraduate student at HKU majoring in Sociology. I have keen interests in Latin America studies, urban studies, film studies, and community construction. As a queer feminist, I also practice sociology in a everyday sense, weaving love and the tenderest corner in a creative way - treating daily life as sociological act and photography as spatial documentation. For my Laidlaw research, I will work on a project named Telling Operatic Stories: Race, ethics, and authenticity at the University of Leeds. Given the breadth of the interdisciplinary nature of opera studies, this research will include, while not limited to musicology, performance studies, and sociology, in a way of exploring decolonization, ethics, and representation. 

Hi! My name is Jimena Alvarez and I am a Peruvian second year student in Trinity College Dublin. I currently concluded my second year studying Political Science and Economics. My research project is titled "Exploratory research into the support worker’s perceptions of the integration experiences of Ukrainian refugees in Ireland".  The purpose of the research is to gather relevant and comprehensive data about support worker’s perceptions of the integration experiences of Ukrainian refugees in Ireland. I will be conducting a focus group and individual interviews with 12 support workers in the field of refugee aid.  I am very excited to connect with other Laidlaw scholars regardless of how different our research projects may be. My name is Hannah Ramsey (she/her), and I am a senior at Barnard College studying neuroscience and English, though my research is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing heavily from the fields of medical anthropology, sociology, and narrative medicine. Currently, I am researching how clinicians' reliance on body composition indicators (BCIs) in health assessments may contribute to the stigmatization of bodies. My intention with this work is to illuminate how moral and aesthetic biases within healthcare teams can negatively influence patient outcomes as a result of the stigmatizing effects associated with body-centric paradigms of health promotion. The goal of this research is to begin conceiving alternative approaches to promoting patients' physical health and subjective well-being that are both body-affirming and size-agnostic. Apart from this research, I also have personal and academic interests in creative writing, writing pedagogy, and advocacy as it relates to the neurodiversity movement. In my spare time, I enjoy writing poetry, playing guitar, and taking long walks outside!

I'm chemist undergraduate student from UR-CST .Currently, I am conducting a research on how humic acid can be extracted from compost materials which are disposed at landfills .Humic acid is known to be used as soil amendment in soil with low organic matter but also to improve both quality of soil and production from agriculture sector.

I am Silvia Fernandez Mulero. I am the Medical Director of Perioperative Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s #1 Hospital according to Newsweek Magazine 2023’s Ranking. There, I lead a phenomenal team of doctors, nurses and allied professions that serve our patients with the highest quality and most innovative approach so they have a safe and smooth surgery and recovery.  An Anaesthesiologist, Critical Care and Pain Doctor by training I have more than 20 years of experience in big and small hospitals and companies, both in the private and public sectors, in Spain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.  I was born in Barcelona where I completed my medical training in Universidad de Barcelona; then I completed a major in Statistics for Medical Research and a PhD in Medicine. I am honoured and delighted to have been awarded the Women in Business Laidlaw Scholarship for the Executive MBA program at London Business School. I am a very curious and analytical problem-solver that can lose track of time researching and collecting data about the challenge at hand, until I get an informed, efficient and elegant solution.  I am straightforward, and I value simplicity and honesty in communication.  I am attracted to smart and forthcoming people that challenge my ideas and speak their minds. I am a commonalities-finder, a born connector, and a believer in that there is no better way to achieve a bond than having a good conversation over food. Because I have always loved to teach in any capacity (peers, junior doctors, patients and the public in general - ask my family...), I have held academic roles such Anaesthesia Residency Program Co-Director and Clinical Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology at Case Western Reserve University. My goal is to contribute to a healthier society by modelling the so much needed healthcare system's paradigm shift, so it successfully sorts the funding, technological and human resources challenges that it is facing worldwide. During the Executive MBA program I have found a passion and a vehicle to do just that: influencing the shift healthcare systems need through innovation. My partners and I will establish ourselves as regional experts in sourcing, nurturing and funding high-impact health-tech ventures combining our expertise and the collective strength of a savvy body of investors deeply rooted in healthcare in the AMENA region to shape the future of health. I was fortunate enough to conduct academic research under the supervision of Stephen Gethins,  Professor of Practice in International Relations at the University of St Andrews and now a sitting MP. Stephen introduced me to a truly fascinating yet often overlooked area of International Relations: sub-state and regional actors and their place in global politics, with a focus on Scotland in particular. Through this, I have developed an interest in Scotland's place in the world as a nation without an independent foreign office, but as a nation with extensive international influence and a powerful global diaspora. This topic formed the basis of my Laidlaw project, my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation, and my PhD. I take a keen interested in other academic fields such as politics, history, and philosophy. Although an International Relations and Sociology student first and foremost, I had the opportunity of studying Ancient History and Classics alongside my degree for two years. If I were to ever win the lottery, you would find me endlessly cycling University, spending my remaining days studying Ancient History and Philosophy, Politics, Anthropology, Theology, Theoretical Physics and Maths, or whatever subject I develop an interest in down the line. Since leaving the University of St Andrews and the Laidlaw Programme, I completed an MRes degree at the University of Glasgow in Sociology and Research Methods. I received a scholarship for a PhD in Sociology at the University of Glasgow which I am completing part-time in addition to my role as Research Officer at Carers Trust Scotland - a charity supporting unpaid carers which I had previously volunteered for. My PhD is a continuation of my Scottish diaspora studies, seeking to reconcile the notion of 'civic Scottishness' with the Scottish identity of the lived diaspora.  

I'm a final year European Studies student, majoring in Spanish and minoring in German, in Trinity College Dublin. My research concerns the memory, experience, and discourse of gendered violence in the Irish and Spanish civil wars. For my LiA, I worked with Women Rights Initiative (WORI), a grassroots, Ugandan women-led women's rights organisation in Jinja, Uganda, focusing on resource mobilisation.
