Week 2 started off in Accra and continued in the Ahafo region of Ghana. Earlier this week, I debriefed with Albert on Chapters 2 and 5 of “ The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell on ideas of leadership and what meant to lead. We also had Monday Morning meetings. My trip to Ahafo started very early at around 4am. We drove from Greater Accra to the Eastern Region, to the Ashanti Region and then to Ahafo Region. It was about a 9 hour road trip from Accra to Ahafo. This year’s cohort of LFG associates have been placed in the Ahafo region in the different underserved schools there. On this trip I got to meet Albert and Davis in person who manage the associates. Our first stop was at the office of the Goaso building planning department in Asunafo North Municipality where we spoke to the director regarding a building project for a capstone project. We then travelled further to Kasapin where we met more associates and checked out the feasibility of the project.  

The main goal of our trip was to organize a two day conference for headteachers and gender coordinators in the partner schools. The conference focused on conversation on gender equity in schools. We segued into how the nature of the communities being farming and mining hindered class attendance. The dialogue in the conference was eye opening. I saw the stark difference between  education in the city and education in the rural areas. I had the chance to lead certain icebreaker activities in the course of the programming. We discussed ways to counter the stereotypes surrounding gender roles in schools and urged the school heads to build upon the action plans they started working on during the conference. Our journey to Accra started on Friday afternoon and we were back by the evening.
