My time working in the gallery has made me reevaluate my definition of leadership. Last summer, for my research project, I researched art and activism. Thus, when I came in, I expected that I would be able to contribute a lot more knowledge. Instead, I have mostly spent my time following and learning from the people around me. Sometimes, they directly give me things to do, but much of the time, I have been looking at what is happening around me to figure out where I can contribute and be helpful. A lot of what I end up doing has been surprising and completely different than what I expected to contribute. Through this experience, I am realizing that sometimes leadership means looking around and recognizing the gaps that I can help fill, instead of directly taking charge.
