One aspect that I didn’t expect to confront in my LiA is the financial side of the art world. In my mind, the art was able to impact political change primarily through its impact on the audience. Traditionally, in a show, the gallery fronts the costs and then takes a high percentage of the sales. Thus, outside of possibly financially supporting a marginalized artist, I didn’t consider that the financial side would have a broader societal impact. The fundraiser show made me reconsider. One of the shows in the gallery sold artworks related to abortion to raise money for abortion access. The possibility of using the sale of art itself to get resources to support important political causes reignited my belief in the capability of art to generate political change.
