"If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off... no matter what they say."

Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) was an American scientist and cytogeneticist. She was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of genetic transposition - the first woman to earn an unshared Nobel prize in that category.

Dr. McClintock's maize cytogenetics research led to many discoveries in the field of genetics, including crossing over during meiosis, the roles of various chromosomal segments, and theories on the suppression and expression of genes.

McClintock received her PhD in botany from Cornell University in 1927 - the latest world-leading institution to join the Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Programme. Learn more.
