My message to young people is, the sky’s the limit. It all depends on your determination, all depends on how you either stop from getting discouraged or moving forward and bettering yourself professionally.

Charting the Course: Dr. Ismail's Formative Years
Born in Hargeisa, Somaliland, Dr. Ismail's early life was marked by a fervent quest for knowledge and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference. Her journey into healthcare began far from home; she traveled to the UK to pursue her education in nursing, becoming the first Somali woman to study and work as a nurse and midwife. This foundational period not only honed her skills but also broadened her perspective, embedding a lifelong commitment to healthcare and education.
A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy
Upon returning to Somaliland, Dr. Ismail channeled her expertise and passion into transformative action. She founded the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa, a beacon of hope and a pioneer in improving maternal and infant health care in the region. Her leadership extended into the political arena, where she served as Somaliland's first female Foreign Minister, tirelessly advocating for women's rights and healthcare reforms. Her relentless campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM) has been pivotal in shifting public opinion and policy on this critical issue.
