LiA Reflections- Medellín, Colombia
It's safe to say that my internship in Colombia was the best experience I've ever had. Being in entirely new circumstances and environments was a great way to push myself out of my comfort zone. One of the most important lessons I learnt was the importance of integrating local knowledge and expertise into project delivery. The social transformation of Medellín speaks for itself, and it was such a privilege to learn from the community actors who helped facilitate it. More than the work, I was welcomed by everyone in Pichacho and La Cruz. Dani and Sam made the experience stress-free and exciting, and made me feel entirely supported throughout. I particularly loved doing the workshops with the kids who were unbothered by my broken Spanish and completely reflected the sense of community throughout. Aside from the internship, learning about the rich history, politics and culture in the very place where it happened was a once-in-a-lifetime experience in itself. Becoming such good friends with my fellow scholars, we explored other parts of the country and definitely made the most of how vibrant and lively Medellín is. I'd love to go back to Colombia in the future and work in social resilience more if the opportunity ever arises!
