I've been working closely with the engagement and outreach team at the Jenner Institute to connect with the Oxford community in a way that will hopefully better our global one. The work that this team does can look like typical science outreach, like the Biomedical Research Centre Open Day shown in the picture below. This event brought together researchers from local universities to present their research at the local mall, which provided an excellent opportunity for us to recruit participants both for the clinical trials themselves and the Public and Patient Involvement Group. However, I also particularly enjoyed a conversation with experts in Health Economics from Oxford, who gave me a new perspective on the kind of "playing God" that goes into determining what exactly gets a limited healthcare budget. I'm excited to have similarly engaging conversations at our stand at Oxford Pride this Saturday! However, connection with community members can also take the form of the emails that I've been sending to prospective participants, which is perhaps less fun but equally necessary. It is this "desk work" community engagement that has been the most worrisome to me, as it is definitely more laidback than the environment I'm used to. However, in order to quell this (incredibly trivial) worry, I hope to utilize social media to engage with communities that the Institute has been trying to reach. Not only does this feel like more direct interaction, it will hopefully help the Institute to further diversify their clinical trials, a primary priority of the outreach and engagement team.

What a cute photo! Thanks for sharing all the different kinds of outreach you're doing--sounds super exciting (yes even the emailing).
