Leadership in Action - Peru Week 5
This week began with an exciting visit to Killa, an experience that deepened my appreciation for traditional handicrafts and sustainable fashion. Participating in a workshop, I gained hands-on experience in textile production, witnessing firsthand the meticulous process of using plants and flowers to create biodegradable dyes. This eco-friendly approach not only preserves the environment but also embodies the ethos of Killa. The workshop also highlighted the social impact of the brand, as women and mothers from the jungle are employed to create these beautiful garments. It was inspiring to see how the production process involves entire families. This visit underscored the importance of sustainability and community in fashion, leaving me with respect for Killa's mission and practices.
In addition, it was exciting to see Communidad and Killa’s showcase, where some other scholars held a fair for indigenous women from the Cantagallo community and the Amazon to sell their products. Handing out flyers on the streets in Kennedy Park to promote the event was a novel experience for me that trained my confidence.
Significantly, Callysta and I planned and coordinated an entire event for our showcase at Casa Ronald. It was an amazing learning experience as we had to create a minute by minute rundown, budget for the event, prepare the materials, setup the venue and host the event as MCs. With support from the facilitators, volunteers at Casa and external volunteers as well as the other scholars, we were pleased that over 30 volunteers attended the event and enjoyed the team building games we had prepared. The sharing of testimonials from older volunteers that we had facilitated created a deeper sense of belonging. The highlight of the event was surely the pizza and karaoke, we were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm and joy we saw on the faces of the volunteers. It was touching that we were able to create smiles and bonding time for the volunteers, and I learnt a lot from the small improvisations and adjustments we had to carry out during the event.
