During the summer of 2022, I took part in a centrally organised LIA project run by Think Pacific in Fiji. The project involved living for 4 weeks in a rural village in the mountains of Viti Levu, Fiji and taking part in workshops run by a non-profit called Alliance for Future Generations (AFG). The aim of the project was to increase awareness of climate change and the risks posed to vulnerable communities in Fiji by its impacts. The workshops covered topics such as the oceans and climate change, resilience to cyclones and other natural disasters and also mental health, sexual health and youth empowerment. As part of the workshops the village youth group was also registered as an official youth group and can now apply for funding grants from the local authorities to improve infrastructure and amenities in the village. In addition, a disaster response plan was drawn up including evacuation strategies and plans to make evacuation centers safe and accessible for all.
