My summer certainly didn't go the way I planned. From a hole in the side of the van, to working my way down a very long list of contributors, I adapted and worked with the team to complete the playbook and serve patients. I planned to expand my understanding of the operations of mobile clinics, and I achieved that are more. But, my planned time with the physical mobile unit was envisioned differently. I learned that Charlottesville is a semi-transient community of students and patients, but is incredibly close-knit and willing to help out each other and any newcomer. I learned what it means to serve communities in that community and how I can contribute to that.
As a future physician, this experience has shown me the administrative efforts, costs, and intricacies of healthcare initiatives. As a future researcher, this experience has shown me that each mobile unit is unique in its its goals and patient population.
While my time with the mobile unit has ended, the lessons I learned and the people I met will be with me throughout my career and my time in healthcare.
