Research Report: Modelling Subjective Barriers to Public Transport Adoption as a Holistic Network
For my Laidlaw Research project, I investigated the complex factors that shape people’s decisions to use, or avoid, public transport. Using a network analysis approach, I mapped the interaction between service quality and infrastructure factors, revealing that trip duration and practical considerations often outweigh traditional service metrics. These findings challenge some long-standing assumptions in the literature and highlight policy levers with real potential for change.
Huge thanks to my supervisor, Dr Michael L. Lengieza, who has helped me tremendously over the last few months. Through this project, I have developed considerably as a researcher and deepened my understanding of urban planning, sustainability efforts, public policy, and environmental psychology.
I’m excited to share key insights and discuss how these results might inform future sustainable transport strategies!
