Hello! I’m Trisha, a second-year student at Cornell University from Texas, USA. I’m majoring in Environment and Sustainability with a concentration in Food Systems, and minoring in International Relations, International Trade and Development, and Climate Change. My interests in combining my enduring passions for writing and wildlife conservation have driven me to explore multiple perspectives on highly-controversial issues such as trophy hunting, retaliatory animal killings, and illegal wildlife crime. Thus, during my first summer as a Laidlaw Scholar and as a member of the Morally Contested Conservation team, I wrote a literature review on the interconnectedness of climate change and human-wildlife conflicts in East and southern Africa — a project I plan to further during my LiA summer in Tanzania. As an aspiring environmental policymaker and journalist, I am passionate about making technical scientific information more accessible to the general public. At Cornell, I am an Institute of Politics and Global Affairs Scholar, through which I interact with policymakers monthly to discuss pervasive issues in international politics. I also speak Marathi, Spanish, and Swahili at varying levels of fluency and plan to continue to grow my language skills to communicate environmental issues across continents and cultures.  For fun, I love to turn even the most mundane materials into recycled art, spend hours on end working through jigsaw puzzles, and go for runs while listening to podcasts. And as a diehard foodie who loves to travel, I’m always looking for recommendations of places to visit or new recipes to try!  The Laidlaw Scholars Program has been an invaluable component of my undergraduate experience. The friendships I’ve made, as well as the research and language skills I’ve begun to develop, have encouraged me to continue to ask and seek answers to complicated questions about global affairs and environmental science. I am from South Orange, New Jersey and I am currently studying Computer Science and Linguistics at Cornell University. I’ve always been fascinated by the interdisciplinary nature of technology and my goal is to find ways to connect technology with other fields to affect positive change. I’m incredibly excited to implement this technological approach in my research project, where I’ll be using data to analyze local effects of maquiladoras and international policies. Outside of academics, I’m an Arts and Sciences Ambassador and Peer Advisor, a member of the Cornell Blockchain club, and an avid rock climber.

I am a third year medical student, aiming to make a difference to people's lives and health, starting with my Laidlaw project. In this project, I will be looking at whether distractor-filtering training can improve working memory in healthy ageing individuals.

I am a final year student, studying Molecular Medicine in Trinity College Dublin.

I'm a BSc Mathematics graduate from the University of St Andrews. My research looks at twelve tone music from an abstract algebra perspective, with the hopes of gaining insight into the thoughts and compositional methods of various composers.

Hello! I am a penultimate year French and Politics student at the University of Leeds with the drive and tenacity to effect positive change on a global scale. My research focuses on identifying West African resistance fighters in the Second World War. I have also developed a keen interest in the Francophone world, French philosophy and Post-colonial Feminist security studies.

Research and Academic Administration

My research project looks at female artists in Scandinavia at the turn of the 19th century, and so by extension historiography and feminist art history. However, my expertise as an undergraduate I would say is medieval art history, particularly looking at how modern imagination directs our understanding and expectations of medieval religious practice. Outside of academia, I am looking to pursue a career in paper conservation after graduating and so have keen interest in archival practices and conservation methodologies. Safe to say I have a lot of interests, and am always looking to further my understanding in the art world!

Hello, Laidlaw community. I am a Durham University BA graduate in Anthropology and Archaeology. I was interested in understanding colonial imperialism in the post-socialist space. As an anthropologist I decided to research in particular Russian and Soviet practices of social governance of non-Russian people, therefore I explored ethnographically the various understandings of the ethnic identity of the contemporary Cossacks.

Hello! I'm Emma, one of the Founding Co-Presidents of the Laidlaw Alumni Society. I'm passionate about the impact of ESG issues on businesses' strategies, diversity in business and musical theatre (in that order!). My Undergraduate Research project focused on UK legislation which requires organisations to publish an annual statement about the efforts they are making to stop modern slavery in their supply chains. In particular, I looked at whether this legislation is making a difference in the fight against modern slavery in supply chains (spoiler alert: it's not!). These days, I work as a lawyer, advising corporate clients on supply chain, ESG, product liability and regulatory risk management and dispute resolution.
