Weekly Report #1
I will be reflecting on my first week at my LiA with the British Red Cross!
Weekly Log Questions
What went well?
- For the first week of my LiA, I felt comfortable with the organization and its people and I was able to continue my training and work without any issues. Also, I was able to get done a couple of mapping projects and progressed in my understanding and use of program/software.
- I also felt completely supported by my supervisor and feel confident that I have a knowledgeable person within the organization who is supporting me during my LiA experience.
What could have been done differently
- One thing I wish I could have done differently is allocating for more time in regards to the weekly training and the milestones that I had set. Since I was not able to meet the mapping/validator goals that I had set for the first week, I realized that these tasks will be taking me longer than I had originally anticipated when I was planning my LiA summer abroad.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
- One thing I learned about myself is that I am the type of person who will try to figure things out myself instead of asking for help or assistance right away. Although this may seem like a positive attribute, it also prevents me from making connections with others in the organization as reaching out to others initiates conversations and fosters relationships.
What did I learn about leadership?
- One thing I learned about leadership is that while independence is a big part of being in a leadership position and an important trait to have, it requires moderation. To elaborate, a leader still needs to work in a group setting with their team instead of constantly trying to resolve issues and work on their own. It becomes a balancing act between independence and group-work.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
- I am still looking to expand and increase my knowledge of the mapping software used and the use of its features. Over the next few weeks, I am also hoping to decrease the time it takes for me to use the software to map/validate. I feel that since I am still new, it is taking me longer than normal to navigate through the software.
